Sex education is going to be included in the school syllabus in India. The government told the Supreme Court that it has agreed to introduce comprehensive sex education in schools/colleges as per the recommendation of a committee. It will be implemented after getting approval from the court.
Its objective is to provide correct, scientific and safe information to children and adolescents according to their age. It is proposed to include topics like body changes, sexual and reproductive health, consent, safe behavior and protection from child sexual abuse.
Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice R. Appearing before Mahadevan’s bench, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati said that the government has accepted the committee’s report. It will be implemented in the entire country.

Consideration of including child sexual abuse in the syllabus
On July 14, 2026, the Central Government told the Supreme Court that it is working towards including comprehensive sex education in the school syllabus.

Government’s stand in court and concern over POCSO
On behalf of the Central Government, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati represented Justice B.V. in the Supreme Court. Nagarathna and R. This matter was placed before Mahadevan’s bench. The court said during the hearing that in many cases teenagers between 16 and 18 years of age enter into relationships with each other and leave home.
After this, their parents file serious criminal cases under the POCSO Act in the name of false honour. This spoils the future of children. In view of this serious concern, the government has decided to work on this problem.

Report prepared by 26 panel members
The government had formed a special panel to investigate the complex issues of privacy and POCSO Act of teenagers who have consensual relationships. A panel of 26 members headed by the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Child Development prepared the report after thorough deliberations.
The responsibility of syllabus will be handed over to NCERT
According to the recommendations of the panel, the responsibility of preparing this new syllabus will be handed over to NCERT. This entire scheme will be implemented according to the rules of the New Education Policy (NEP 2020).
The report has suggested that sex educational education should be given to children according to their age from the primary school level itself. For this, it has also been said to appoint expert teachers in schools.

Sex education is given in primary schools of most countries.
According to UNESCO and WHO reports, about 85% of countries have some form of school-based sex-related policy or law. In most countries, children in classes 1 to 5 are taught topics such as identifying body parts, private parts and their safety, good touch–bad touch, saying “no” and asking for help from a trusted adult, personal boundaries, family, friendship and respect, hygiene and health, and online safety and cyberbullying.
