- President Murmu Confers Padma Awards 66 Personalities | May 26 Current Affairs

NATIONAL
1. President Draupadi Murmu presented Padma Awards at Rashtrapati Bhavan
- On 25 May, President Draupadi Murmu presented the Padma Awards in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
- In the first phase of the ceremony, out of the sanctioned 131 Padma awards, 66 people were honored.
- The remaining award winners will be honored in the second phase of the ceremony.
- The names of the award winners were announced on Republic Day.
- Padma awards are the country’s highest civilian awards. It was established in 1954.
- This award is given in many different categories including art, literature, education, sports, medicine, social work, science and engineering, public relations and business and industry.
- This year, 131 people have been selected for Padma Awards by the government. Of these, 19 are women.
- 5 personalities have been selected for Padma Vibhushan, 13 for Padma Bhushan and 113 for Padma Shri.
- 2 personalities were posthumously awarded Padma Vibhushan. In this, former Kerala CM V.S. Achuthanandan and Bollywood actor Dharmendra.
2. Sansad Ratna Award to 12 MPs and 4 committees
- The names of the winners of the Sansad Ratna Awards were announced on 24 May.
- 12 MPs and 4 parliamentary committees have been selected for the Sansad Ratna Awards.
- Out of these 12, 10 are Lok Sabha MPs and 2 are Rajya Sabha MPs.
- 4 Lok Sabha members have been selected in the individual category- 1. Jagdambika Pal from Uttar Pradesh 2. P.P from Rajasthan Chowdhary3. Nishikant Dubey from Jharkhand 4. Shrikant Eknath Shinde from Maharashtra
- 6 Lok Sabha MPs have been selected in different categories-1. Praveen Patel from Uttar Pradesh2. Vidyut Baran Mahato from Jharkhand3. Lumbaram Chaudhary from Rajasthan4. Hemant Vishnu Savra from Maharashtra5. Smita Uday Wagh from Maharashtra6. Naresh Ganpat Mhaske from Maharashtra
- Medha Vishram Kulkarni of Maharashtra and Narhari Amin of Gujarat have been honored from Rajya Sabha.
- Honored 4 committees- 1. Agriculture Committee, it is headed by Charanjit Singh Channi.2. Finance Committee, its Chairman is Bhartrihari Mahtab.3. Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Committee, its chairman is Saptagiri Shankar Ulaka.4. Coal and Mines Committee, its chairman is Anurag Singh Thakur.
- This award is given by Prime Point Foundation to the MPs who perform best in Parliament.
- It was started in 2010 by former President Dr. A.P.J. It was done on the advice of Abdul Kalam.
3. ‘Uniform Civil Code’ (UCC) bill introduced in Assam Assembly
- On May 25, the Uniform Civil Code i.e. UCC Bill was introduced in the Assam Assembly. The bill will be discussed in the House on May 27.
- Once the bill is passed, Assam will become the third state in India to implement UCC after Uttarakhand and Gujarat.
- The objective of UCC is to create a uniform civil law for all citizens by eliminating separate personal laws.
- The main provision of the bill is to give equal rights to both sons and daughters in ancestral property.
- The bill makes it mandatory for couples living in live-in relationships to register.
- After the implementation of UCC, the same law will apply to all communities in the state in personal matters like marriage, divorce and inheritance.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora presented the bill on behalf of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
4. Egyptian Vulture, considered extinct, found in Chanderi
- On May 24, the endangered Egyptian Vulture was found in Chanderi, MP. It is also called white vulture.
- Chanderi Forest Department had conducted a special vulture census campaign from 22 to 24 May.
- Egyptian Vulture was also found along with a total of 45 vultures.
- The International Union for Conservation of Nature i.e. IUCN had kept this bird in the category of extinct birds.
- The Egyptian Vulture is also called nature’s cleaner. It helps in cleaning the environment by eating the flesh of dead organisms.
- The presence of the Egyptian Vulture in Chanderi shows that the ecosystem here is still suitable for the flourishing of these rare birds.
The color of the Egyptian Vulture is white and its face is yellow.
5. QUAD Foreign Ministers meeting will be held in New Delhi
- The meeting of foreign ministers of QUAD will be held in New Delhi on 26 May.
- QUAD is an informal strategic grouping of four countries – India, US, Japan and Australia. Its full name is ‘Quadrilateral Security Dialogue’.
- Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will participate in the meeting.
- India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar will preside over the meeting.
- The objective of the meeting is to maintain peace, security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
- In 2007, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe introduced the idea of QUAD.
6. India won gold in Ultrarunners 24H Running Championship
- India won 4 medals including gold in the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) 24H Asia and Oceania Championships.
- These championships were held on 23 and 24 May in Hirosaki City, Japan.
- In the championship, India’s Amar Singh Devanda won the gold medal in the men’s category by covering a distance of 282.881 kilometers in 24 hours. India has also won silver and bronze medals.
- In the women’s category, the Indian team covered a total distance of 667.722 kilometers and won the bronze medal.
- 81 players from 9 countries participated in this Endurance Championship.
- The International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) launched the 24H Asia & Oceania Championships in 2018.
- In this championship, the ability and stamina to run continuously for 24 hours is tested. It was held for the first time in Taipei, Taiwan.
