Uttar Pradesh’s Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay is in the news because of his statement on popular English rhymes. He said at a function in Kanpur on May 5 that the children’s English rhyme ‘Johnny-Johnny Yes Papa’ does not teach Indian values and values, but teaches lying. English rhymes teach children to lie. During the Shikshamitra (Para Teachers and Contractual Educators) felicitation ceremony, Yogendra Upadhyay spoke on education and values. The minister said that the values needed by today’s generation are not found in such western poems. Hindi poems teach values of life. Yogendra Upadhyay gave the example of another poem and said that in Indian values there is no place for Swatanth Sukhay i.e. one’s own happiness, rather it talks about the welfare of Bahujan. He said that in poems like ‘Rain Rain Go Away, My Johnny Wants to Play’, Hindi poetry does not teach to ignore everyone’s needs for one’s own happiness. Yogendra Upadhyay also said that the old Hindi poems, which the previous generations grew up reading, contained deep values of life. DU professor said, ‘This rhyme teaches accountability’ Regarding this rhyme, English professor at Delhi University says, ‘It is the minister’s own understanding to look at every poem and story through the prism of morality. But it is not necessary that all children’s poems and stories are meant to teach values. Some are also meant for fun. This is important for the overall development of children. He further said that this poem is a very common conversation between a parent and a child. Which, in a way, teaches accountability, it teaches that you cannot get away easily by lying. If you have accountability, you will have to open your mouth and show proof. Ministers must read this poem. According to him, a similar conversation takes place between Yashoda and Krishna when they refuse to eat butter. Rhyme is a part of CBSE’s pre-school syllabus. The popular English children’s rhyme ‘Johnny Johnny Yes Papa’ is a part of CBSE’s nursery and pre-school syllabus. In many places this is taught to children beyond the syllabus. Although this rhyme is not a part of NCERT syllabus. Honorarium of Shikshamitras increased from Rs 10 to Rs 18 thousand. During the programme, he also handed over symbolic checks of increase in honorarium to 12 Shikshamitras. He told that the government has increased the honorarium of Shikshamitras from Rs 10 thousand to Rs 18 thousand. According to the minister, this will especially improve the standard of living of Shikshamitras working in rural and remote areas.
