NATIONAL
1. NCRB criminalizes animal cruelty
On May 8, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for the first time included crimes registered under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 in its ‘Crime in India 2024 report.
- Earlier, animal cruelty cases were kept in the general category of ‘Special and Local Laws’, but now it is recorded separately.
- This record will help in improving animal safety. This data will reveal the magnitude of violence against animals in India.
- Inclusion of Cruelty to Animals Act will enable identification and monitoring of crimes against animals.
- According to the report, a total of 9,039 cases related to animal cruelty were registered in 2024. 10,312 people were arrested in these cases, including 10,257 men.
- Their total value was estimated to be around Rs 48.8 crore. In 44.9 percent of these cases, stolen animals were recovered. This is more than the cases of property related crimes.
- The police filed charge sheets in 96.7% of the cases, thereby showing proactivity at the investigation level.
- However, at the end of the year, about 2,070 cases, or about 22.9% of the cases, remained pending investigation.
- After this report, for the first time, cases of cruelty to animals will be analyzed along with other crime categories.
- The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act is a central law passed by the Parliament of India in 1960.

The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 defines animal as any living creature other than a human being.
2. DRDO and Indian Air Force successfully test fired TARA
On May 7, Defense Research and Development Organization i.e. DRDO and Indian Air Force conducted the first successful test of Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) weapon off the coast of Odisha.
- This testing was done with a Jaguar fighter jet off the coast of Odisha.
- TARA is India’s first indigenous glide weapon system, which will convert weapons without guide systems into guided systems.
- This glide weapon has been designed and developed by Research Center Building, Hyderabad in collaboration with DRDO.
- Glide weapon is an indigenous glide weapon system. Which is the first most modern and low cost system.
- TARA can attack enemy ground targets from a distance of 120 km.
- The TARA system can be installed with fighter jets like Sukhoi-30 (Su-30), Jaguar and Tejas.

TARA is the country’s first glide weapon system which works on ultra-low cost systems along with being state-of-the-art.
International 3. Death sentence to two former defense ministers in China
On May 7, China sentenced two former defense ministers Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe to death in corruption cases.
- According to the report, both will be kept in jail for the first 2 years. After reconsideration after 2 years, the sentence can be changed to life imprisonment.
- Li Shangfu was suddenly removed from office last year, while Wei Fenghe also came under investigation for military corruption.
- Both ministers were expelled from China’s ruling Communist Party in 2024.
- China’s former Defense Minister Li Shangfu was suddenly removed from his post in October last year.
- Now for the first time Chinese officials have officially admitted that a corruption-related investigation was going on against them.
- He has been accused of taking bribes on a large scale, giving bribes to others and abusing his position.
- Former Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe has been accused of taking bribes and abusing his position. China’s military court has found him guilty of corruption.

4. Former midfielder Mohan Singh passes away
On May 7, former All India Football Federation (AIFF) mid-fielder Mohan Singh passed away.
- Mohan Singh started his career in the 1970s.
- Singh played his first senior national match against Burma in 1972 in Rangoon during the pre-Olympic tournament.
- Singh earned three caps for India in the 1972 Pre-Olympics.
- At the domestic level, Mohan Singh represented Bengal in the Santosh Trophy in 1972 and played a key role in the team’s successful campaign, scoring two goals as Bengal won the title.
- Singh played in the Calcutta Football League in 1972 and 1975.
- In 1972, Singh won the IFA Shield, Durand Cup, Rovers Cup and Bordoloi Trophy.
- Mohan Singh also represented Mohammedan Sporting Club in 1976, and went on to have a distinguished career in Indian club football.

5. Cricketer Amanpreet Gill passes away
On May 6, India Under-19 player Amanpreet Gill passed away. He was 36 years old.
- Amanpreet took 11 wickets in 6 first-class matches for Punjab.
- Amanpreet was also a part of the Punjab franchise (Kings XI Punjab) in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League.
- Gill also served as a member of the Senior Selection Board of Punjab.
- Gill was a part of Under-19 under the captaincy of Virat Kohli in 2007.
- Gill played five Youth ODIs and one Youth Test for India in 2007.
- Gill took the wicket of former Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera.
