All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has issued orders to close 58 engineering and technical colleges across the country during the academic session 2025-26. However, students who are already admitted in these colleges will not be left out.
Most private colleges closed
Private colleges have suffered the most loss in this action. Out of the total 58 institutions to be closed, 55 colleges are private i.e. run on private funds. Only 3 colleges are government-aided.
According to AICTE, when the last batch passes for the courses currently being taught in the college, then the operation of the college will be completely stopped. If any case requires complete closure, students can be transferred to other colleges as per AICTE rules.
More than 950 courses closed
According to the AICTE official, this action is not limited to closing colleges only. Meanwhile, more than 950 technical and engineering courses running in different technical institutes across the country have also been closed forever. The courses in which students were not interested or the college did not have the right resources to run them, have been left out of the list.

What is AICTE:
It is the statutory advisory body and regulator for technical education in India. It oversees programs in engineering, architecture, management and pharmacy. AICTE orders closure of institutions due to various reasons like low admission of students, inability to retain required number of teachers, non-compliance of infrastructure and recognition norms etc.
