Today’s major current affairs, which are important for students preparing for government jobs-
NATIONAL
1. PM Modi and President Murmu will visit Odisha
- On June 20, President Draupadi Murmu and PM Narendra Modi will jointly visit Odisha.
- The theme of this program to be held in Odisha is ‘Vikas Ra Dhara, Odisha Sara’.
- Development projects worth more than Rs 47,600 crore will be inaugurated and foundation stones laid in this program.
- These projects will be started in Paharpur and Rairangpur. President Murmu and PM Modi will visit the skill center of Paharpur School.
- The project includes the 600 MW Upper Indravati Pumped Storage Project and Phase II expansion of IB Thermal Power Station.
- Under this expansion, two new units of 660-660 MW will be set up. Apart from this, the foundation stone of Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL) project will also be laid at Lakhanpur in Jharsuguda district.
- Along with this, this project will include projects in many sectors including railways, industrial investment and development related programs like better road connectivity, pure drinking water, health, education, tourism and irrigation.
The 600 MW Upper Indravati Pumped Storage Project is also included in this project.
2. Rahul Vats becomes the new chairperson of COAI
- On June 18, India’s telecom industry body Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has appointed Rahul Vats as the new chairperson of COAI.
- Information about Rahul’s appointment was given in the annual meeting of COAI.
- COAI is an organization of private telecommunication service providers in India.
- Its key members include Bharti Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi).
- Through this organization, it communicates with the government, Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and regulatory bodies on policy issues for the industry.
- Rahul Vats is currently Group Chief Regulatory Officer and Director (Corporate Affairs) at Bharti Airtel.
- Rahul will replace former COAI president Abhijeet Kishore. Along with this, Ravi P Gandhi of Reliance Jio was appointed Vice Chairperson of COAI.
Rahul is an expert in spectrum management, telecom licensing, economic regulation.

3. Gautam Talwar, former Chief Content Officer of MX Player, passes away
- On June 18, Gautam Talwar, former Chief Content Officer of MX Player OTT, passed away.
- Gautam started INjoy Entertainment in 2024 after being CCO of MX Player for 7 years.
- Gautam Talwar, a prominent content leader of the OTT and digital entertainment industry, passed away.
- Gautam served as Chief Content Officer during MX Player’s initial OTT expansion.
- Gautam was the creative lead and executive production lead of famous shows like Ashram, Queen, Dharavi Bank.
- Gautam played an important role in bringing regional content in languages like Tamil, Marathi into the mainstream.
- Gautam also created an animated series for young children in India called ‘Jalebi Street’, which has received more than 250 million views.
- Under Gautam’s leadership, MX Player became one of India’s largest AVOD i.e. Advertising Video on Demand platforms.
Gautam Talwar also received the Filmfare Award for Times of Music.
4. Padmashree Robert AF Thurman passes away
- On June 18, AF Thurman, a renowned American writer on Tibetan Buddhism, died. He was 84 years old.
- Robert was the first Westerner to receive initiation from the 14th Dalai Lama and is considered one of the world’s most influential scholars of Tibetan Buddhism.
- He was a writer, translator, teacher. He served as ‘Je Tsong Khapa Professor’ of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University.
- Robert was the first person to hold the first ‘endowed chair’ (special academic position) in Buddhist studies in the Western world.
- Robert specialized in Indo-Tibetan philosophy, psychology, and Buddhist texts, and he also translated a number of Tibetan Buddhist scriptures.
- Robert did his PhD in Sanskrit and Indian Studies from Harvard University.
- His major books include Essential Tibetan Buddhism, The Tibetan Book of the Dead, Infinite Life, Why the Dalai Lama Matters, Love Your Enemies.
- In 1997, Robert was named one of the 25 most influential Americans by Time magazine.
- In 2020, Robert was awarded the Padma Shri award by the Government of India for his contribution in the field of literature and education.
Robert worked closely with the Dalai Lama for several decades.
International
5. Bimal N Patel will be the legal expert of ITLOS
- On June 19, Indian law expert and maritime law scholar Bimal N Patel was elected as the National Legal Expert of ITLOS, International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
- ITLOS settles maritime disputes under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
- Bimal Patel’s tenure will be from 2026 to 2035. He will replace Neeru Chadha.
- Presently Bimal is the Vice Chancellor of National Defense University. He has been a member of the International Law Commission of the United Nations.
- Elected as a member of the International Law Commission (ILC) in 2021 and won the election with the highest number of votes in the Asia-Pacific region.
- India’s Principal Lead Academic Advisor to the United Nations Security Council in 2022.
- In 2025, the Government of India officially nominated him for ITLOS Legal Advisor.
- This will strengthen India’s voice and influence on issues related to the Indo-Pacific region and maritime security.
- ITLOS is headquartered in Hamburg, Germany. It settles international disputes related to maritime boundaries, shipping rights, Special Economic Zones (EEZ), marine resources and the marine environment.
Bimal is considered an expert in maritime law, international law and global governance.

6. Jaipur included in the 20 best art and cultural cities of the world
- On June 19, Jaipur city was ranked 18th among the 20 best art and cultural cities of the world.
- London is at number one in this list and Jaipur is the only city of India which has got a place in the top 20.
- This ranking has been released by London based international magazine ‘Time Out’.
- These rankings are given on the basis of cities’ cultural heritage, museums and art programs.
- Jaipur has traditional handicrafts like blue pottery, block printing and historical monuments like Hawa Mahal and City Palace.
- Jaipur received this honor for its rich art, culture, handicrafts, architectural heritage and vibrant cultural events.
- Jaipur is also known internationally for its literary, art and cultural festivals.
Jaipur is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Cities.
7. Approval for major investment in mining sector in Andhra Pradesh
- On June 19, Andhra Pradesh state government has approved major investments and new technologies in the mining sector.
- This information was given by Mines Principal Secretary Mukesh Kumar Meena in the press conference.
- According to Mukesh report, CM Chandrababu Naidu has approved investment proposals worth Rs 30,515 crore in the state.
- Jonagiri gold mine is located in Kurnool and is being developed by Geomysore Services India Private Limited.
- More than ₹400 crore has been invested in this project. The target is to produce about 750–1000 kg of gold annually from this mine.
- Apart from Jonagiri, gold reserves have also been identified in Ramgiri, Chigurugunta and other areas in the state, which will further increase production in future.
- At present Hutti Gold Mines of Karnataka is the main active gold producing area of the country.
- After this project, India’s dependence on gold imports will reduce.
- India imports more than 800 tonnes of gold every year.
- Now Jonagiri Gold Project in Kurnool district of Andhra is considered to be the largest private gold mine in the country.
- This mine will save foreign exchange and promote private investment in the mining sector.
