1. World’s second largest battery energy storage system launched in India
- On May 26, India launched the country’s first green energy transition Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
- The total capacity of this battery energy storage system is 3.37 GW/hour.
- This renewable energy company has been started by Adani Green Energy Limited in Khavda on the Kutch border in Gujarat.
- After the BESS system, electricity generated from solar or wind energy can be stored in batteries and supplied to any city when needed.
- This BESS system has been started in 10 months. Through this system, electricity can be provided to an entire city like Goa, Indore, Chandigarh.
- BESS system storage can keep 12 million LED bulbs lit continuously for 10 hours.
- India will be the second country in the world after China to have such large renewable energy storage.
- China has built the world’s largest battery projects in Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang provinces.
- The capacity of China’s Chhagan Hada Project is 4 thousand mega watt hour. These batteries work non-stop even in minus 35 degrees Celsius.
Battery Energy Storage System (BESS);
- BESS is a technology in which electricity is stored in rechargeable batteries, so that it can be used when needed.
- Utility-scale BESS projects primarily use lithium-ion batteries, power conversion systems, and energy management technologies.

This is the largest battery storage project built at one place in the entire world except China.
2. Government will sell its 2% stake in Coal India
- On May 27, the central government will sell up to 2% of its stake in Coal India through Offer for Sale (OFS).
- This stake will be sold through OFS at a minimum price of Rs 412 per share.
- The government will get about Rs 5,000 crore by selling 2% stake in Coal India i.e. about 12.32 crore shares at the price of Rs 412 per share.
- ‘Green Shoe’ option has also been kept in OFS, first the government will sell 1% shares, then another 1% shares will be sold.
- Investors have started bidding in Coal India from May 27, it will open for non-retail investors on May 29.
- The objective of the government to sell shares of Coal India through Offer for Sale is to meet the disinvestment target with the funds coming from the shares.
- The government sets a target of earning through disinvestment every year in its budget.
- The Government of India holds 63.13% stake in Coal India Limited (CIL).

3. Shooter Randhir Singh passes away
- On May 27, Randhir Singh, who gave India its first gold in shooting in the Asian Games, passed away. He was 79 years old.
- Randhir was a five-time Olympian from 1968 to 1984.
- In 1978, Randhir won the gold medal in trap shooting in the Asian Games.
- In 1979, Randhir was given the Arjuna Award for excellence in shooting.
- Randhir was the General Secretary of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) from 1987 to 2012.
- Randhir was the President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) from 1991 to 2015.
- In 2004, Randhir was awarded the Padma Shri for his services.
- Randhir becomes the first Indian to become the President of Olympic Council of Asia in 2024.

Randhir was a member of the International Olympic Committee from 2001 to 2014.
4. Actor Ramakant Dayama passes away
- TV and film actor Ramakant Dayama passed away on 26 May. He was 69 years old.
- Ramakant started his acting career in 2006 with Sanjay Dutt starrer film Tahastu.
- As an actor, Ramakant Dayma got the most popularity from the Prateik Gandhi starrer web series Scam 1992.
- Ramakant Dayama has had a long journey in films and TV. He played many memorable characters in his career.
- Apart from this, he was also seen in Akshay Kumar’s film ‘Ram Setu’ and Siddharth Malhotra’s ‘Brothers’.

Ramakant Dayama worked in the superhit film ‘Chak De India’ starring Shahrukh Khan.

5. ‘Yogasana’ will be included in the Commonwealth Games 2030
- According to the Union Sports Ministry on May 27, ‘Yogasana’ will be included in the Commonwealth Games 2030.
- Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has talked about the inclusion of Yogasana in Ahmedabad during the inauguration of the World Yogasana Championship 2026.
- These championships will be played in many categories, which include traditional yoga, artistic yoga, performance yoga and team competition.
- Along with this, India is also considering including some other indigenous games like Kabaddi, Kho Kho, Malkhamb in the Commonwealth.
- Along with this, the first World Yogasana Championship will be organized in Ahmedabad from June 4 to 8, in which more than 75 countries and more than 500 athletes will participate.
- In which athletes will participate in junior, youth and special categories following the rules at the international level.

India will host the Commonwealth Games 2030.
6. Two Indians won gold in Asian Wrestling Championship
- On May 26, two freestyle wrestlers Kumar, Mohit and Chandramohan won gold medals in the ongoing Asian Under-23 Wrestling Championship in Vietnam.
- India has won medals in many different categories and has won 6 medals so far in freestyle.
- Kumar Mohit won gold in 65 kg category and Chandramohan won gold in 79 kg category.
- Mohit met Oskonbai A. of Kyrgyzstan. Abdismatov was defeated 12-4. Ayer Chandramohan defeated Yerkhan Abil of Kazakhstan.
- The Under-23 Asian Wrestling Championship 2026 has started from 23 May 2026 in Da Nang city of Vietnam and will continue till 31 May 2026.

On Monday, Deepak had won bronze in 61 kg category.

7. India’s first ‘Hydrogen Fuel Cell’ train successfully tested
- On 27 May, the Railway Board approved India’s first hydrogen fuel cell DEMU train.
- Hydrogen fuel cell DEMU train will run on Jind-Sonipat route (Haryana).
- This is being considered a big step towards environment friendly transportation.
- The Railway Ministry had given clearance to this project with safety conditions.
- Hydrogen trains are completely pollution free as they release only water vapour.
- This project will help in meeting India’s target of ‘Net Zero’ carbon emissions.
- This technology will reduce diesel consumption and save foreign exchange.
- India has joined the select countries of the world to adopt this technology.
- The train was successfully tested and its commercial use will start soon.
- Hydrogen fuel cells aim to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote green energy.
- India aims to make railways zero carbon by 2030. Its maximum speed will be 75 kilometers per hour.
- After the start of commercial operation of hydrogen train in India, India will join select countries of the world like Germany, Sweden, Japan and China.

Northern Railway had also tested hydrogen cell fuel based DPRS 1200 KW DEMU.
