Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari can now file a civil suit against Meta Platforms, X and Google LLC. The Bombay High Court on Monday gave Gadkari permission to take action against AI-generated deepfake videos and digital content related to the ethanol controversy.
Gadkari has said in his petition that in these videos he has been wrongly linked to the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) program and E20 initiative. Deepfake-videos are also being used on social media. It has been demanded in the case that such content should be removed.
According to the petition, both these projects completely belong to the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Gadkari has no role in them.
Why is there opposition to E20 petrol in India?
There is opposition in India against this mixture of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol (E20). Especially the owners of petrol vehicles manufactured before 2023 are worried. They claim that with this fuel the mileage of vehicles is decreasing, maintenance costs have increased and engine parts are getting damaged quickly.
Government ministries were also made defendants
The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Ministry of Telecommunications have also been made defendants in this case.
Gadkari has clarified that the purpose of this case is not to stop public discussion or criticism of government policies. The petition states that its purpose is not to stop the public from impartial debate or criticism on any government decision.
Gadkari argues that the content on social media is completely false, fabricated and malicious. According to the petition, unknown persons have spread the false impression through AI videos that Gadkari and his family are making profits from the EBP and E20 initiatives.
