The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has alleged that the waste water coming out of Tata Electronics’ iPhone components factory has contaminated the ground water of nearby fields.
The regulator has warned the company that if a satisfactory reply is not received, the power to the factory will be cut and it will be forcibly closed.
Complaints were received about water from fields and wells being contaminated.
This plant of Tata Electronics is located in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, where the back panel and other parts of the iPhone are made. Owners of agricultural land near the plant had complained to the pollution board that the factory’s wastewater was polluting the water in their fields and open wells. It was only after this complaint by the farmers that the Pollution Board started investigating the matter.
Inspection conducted 5 times, allegations of not following instructions
According to the regulator’s notice, following complaints from farmers, this plant was inspected 5 times at the state level between December 2025 and May 2026. In a three-page notice issued on May 25, 2026, the board said that Tata had released dirty water into the rain water harvesting pond built within its premises.
This pond overflowed, contaminating the ground water of open wells located in the surrounding agricultural land. Earlier on December 23, 2025, the board had also issued instructions to the company, but Tata did not take any corrective steps on them.
Tata claims- We are fully following the rules
Tata Electronics has made its stand clear on this entire matter. The company said in a statement that they have got it independently tested (independent analysis) by a recognized laboratory. This study has revealed that the company is fully following all the regulatory norms.
The company is committed to responsible business practices, protection of the environment and local communities and has sent its response to the pollution authorities. However, Tata has not given detailed information about this answer.
Apple’s India supply chain has faced problems before
This notice has come as a new problem for Apple’s supply chain in India. Earlier in September 2024, there was a fire in the same Hosur plant of Tata, due to which the production of iPhone components was stopped for some time.
In September 2023, work was halted for several days due to a fire at the iPhone plant of Apple’s former supplier Pegatron. Apart from this, an investigation in 2024 revealed that Foxconn kept married women away from assembly jobs in one of its Indian plants, although the company claimed to follow all the rules.
Why is Tata Electronics important for Apple?
Tata Electronics is very important for Apple as the company wants to expand its iPhone production outside China. Tata Electronics has become Apple’s second largest supplier in South Asia after Taiwan’s Foxconn.
According to research firm Counterpoint, four years ago, India’s share in the total iPhones manufactured globally was just 6%, which is expected to increase to 26% in the year 2026.
Record of closing factories for violation of rules
In India, disciplinary action has been continuously taken against companies for not following pollution control rules. The Environment Ministry had told Parliament in February that out of 5,44,364 industries inspected in the last five years, 4.4% were found violating environmental standards, following which pollution control departments closed 3,600 factories.
Earlier in 2024, after Mercedes-Benz’s only Indian car plant was caught ignoring the rules, the company had improved wastewater and air pollution management.
What are Apple’s supplier rules?
Apple enforces very strict rules (Supplier Code of Conduct) for its suppliers. Under this, there are strict guidelines regarding the management of waste water (dirty water from the factory) and protection of the environment.
If a supplier violates these rules, Apple can suspend or terminate its contract with him. At present, no official statement has come from Apple and Tamil Nadu government in this matter.
