A new dress code has been fixed for the new academic session in St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. Under this, students have been prohibited from wearing shorts in the classroom and many other parts of the campus.
College Principal Professor Susan Elia has issued this notice in the name of Campus Regulations and Guidelines on July 26. In this, all junior members have been ordered to strictly follow these rules in the campus.
Students said – this is moral policing
According to the notice issued by the college, wearing of shorts has been banned in classrooms, tutorials, labs, libraries, dining halls, assembly halls and chapels. After this, at the beginning of the new session on 28-29 July, many students deliberately reached college wearing shorts and protested against this rule. The protesting students say that this is ‘moral policing’ and interfering in the personal choices of the students.
Some professors say that earlier wearing of shorts was prohibited informally in some areas but for the first time it has been issued as a written instruction.
This decision has more impact on the players
After the protest by the students, a debate has erupted in the college regarding dress code and personal freedom. This rule of the college has the biggest impact on the players of sports teams, who come in official sports kit for morning practice. Usually these students come for practice wearing shorts only. Due to this, they are not given entry in the dining hall.
The purpose of this rule is to maintain discipline
The college administration says that the purpose of these rules is to maintain discipline, respectful environment and traditions of the institution on the campus. In the notice, appealing to the students for cooperation, it has been said that everyone should together maintain the dignified environment of the college.
Some people said that the college has the right to decide the dress code to maintain discipline and dignity of the institution. Others called it an unnecessary restriction on the personal freedom of students.
