1. Deal signed between India and Australia for the purchase of uranium
- On July 9, a deal was signed between India and Australia regarding uranium.
- This deal happened during the talks between PM Narendra Modi and Australian PM Anthony Albanese.
- India and Australia will also jointly develop Critical Minerals Corridor.
- Australia will provide uranium to India for civil nuclear reactors.
- With this, Australia will now be able to supply uranium for India’s peaceful nuclear energy program.
- The agreement will support India’s target of 100 GW nuclear power capacity by 2047.
- Both countries also agreed to increase cooperation in critical minerals, green hydrogen, maritime security and defense cooperation.
- In a joint press conference in Melbourne, PM Modi and Australian PM Anthony Albanese announced agreements in many areas including defence, trade, energy, space and critical minerals.

2. DRDO successfully tests Pinaka long-range guided rocket
- On July 8, DRDO successfully test-fired Pinaka Long-Range Guided Rocket (LRGR) from Chandipur, Odisha.
- The rocket completed all the planned maneuvers during the flight and hit the target accurately.
- This new guided variant has been fired from the ‘Pinaka Launcher’ already in use in the Indian Army.
- LRGR can be launched from Pinaka variants with different ranges from the same launcher.
- Pinaka LRGR has been jointly designed by DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) lab and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL).
Defense Secretary and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh was present during the testing.

3. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly to be inducted into ICC Hall of Fame
- On July 10, it was announced to induct former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly into the ICC Hall of Fame.
- It will be announced on July 11 at the ICC annual conference in Edinburgh, Scotland.
- Ganguly will be the 12th cricketer from India to make it to the Hall of Fame.
- Ganguly took over the captaincy of the Indian team in 2000 after the match-fixing controversy.
- Under Ganguly’s captaincy, India won the 2002 Champions Trophy and played the final of the 2003 ODI World Cup.
- Won a historic Test series in Pakistan in 2004 and also broke Australia’s record of 16 consecutive Test wins.
- Ganguly scored 7212 runs in 113 Tests for India, which included 16 centuries.
- He has 11363 runs and 22 centuries in his name in 311 ODIs. He also took 132 wickets in international cricket.
- After batting, he has also been the BCCI President and currently the President of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

- Hall of Fame is the highest individual honor of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
- It includes those great players, umpires or administrators who have performed exceptionally well in their international career.
- Before any player can be included in this Hall of Fame, it is necessary for him to complete at least 5 years of retirement.
- So far, 12 Indian players have been given this honour, which include Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni.
ICC gives a special ‘Hall of Fame Cap’ to the member selected for Hall of Fame honour.
4. Chess player Ashwath S becomes 98th Grandmaster
- On July 9, 17 year old Ashwath S. Achieved his third and final Grandmaster (GM) norm.
- Ashwath has become India’s 98th Chess Grandmaster by winning the Pune International Grandmaster Round Robin 2026.
- Currently his standard FIDE rating is 2517.
- Ashwath achieved his first Grandmaster norm at the Grenke Open A in Germany earlier this year.
- Ashwath won the tournament on tie-break with 8 points from nine matches and recorded the highest ranking of 2779.
- Ashwath had achieved the International Master (IM) title in 2023 and achieved a FIDE rating of 2500 points.
- Born in Kanyakumari, Ashwath has been playing chess since the age of just 3 years. His father AC Shiva was also his first coach.
Grandmaster (GM) Norm
- Grandmaster is the highest international chess title awarded by FIDE.
- To become a Grand Master, it is necessary to achieve three Grand Master standards.
- Along with this, the candidate has to achieve FIDE rating of 2500 or more.
In September 2023, Ashwath won the silver medal in the Asian Junior Open Chess Championship.
5.New Zealand made 57% export tariff free for India
- On July 9, New Zealand’s PM Christopher Luxon announced to make 57% of exports tariff free.
- New Zealand PM has made this announcement just before PM Narendra Modi’s visit to New Zealand. Modi will reach New Zealand on Friday.
- After this announcement, 57% of kiwi fruit, apple, meat products, forest and wood products exported from India will remain export free.
- Also, not all dairy products will be tariff-free. Along with this, some re-export dairy and bulk infant formula products will be duty free.
- All exports from India will get duty-free access to the New Zealand market.
- There have been talks about a free trade agreement between India and New Zealand from time to time.
- After this, the historic India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement was officially signed in April 2026.
- Under this agreement, Indian exporters have received 100% tariff (duty) free access to New Zealand.
- At the same time, India has reduced or eliminated tariffs on 95% of the products coming from New Zealand, in which 57% of the products will become completely tariff-free from the very first day of implementation.
- The first free trade agreement was signed between India and Sri Lanka in 1998, which was implemented from 2000.
This agreement has been made with the aim of promoting trade, investment and economic cooperation between the two countries.

6. World’s first commercial nuclear-powered satellite launched
- On July 8, SpaceX successfully launched BOHR (Betavoltaic Orbital High-Reliability), the world’s first commercial nuclear-powered satellite.
- This launch has been done under Transporter-17 mission and this satellite has been developed by American company City Labs.
- This satellite is a small ‘CubeSat’, which is approximately the size of a softball.
- It was launched into orbit using SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket along with 80 other payloads.
- This is believed to be the world’s first commercial nuclear-powered satellite.
- Solar panels are still used for normal operation of the current BOHR satellite.
- This is an important achievement towards the commercial use of nuclear energy in space.
- This may be useful in future permanent dark areas of the Moon and in deep space missions.
- This is a major step towards developing a more reliable energy source for long-duration space missions.
BOHR (Betavoltaic Orbital High-Reliability)
- Nano tritium betavoltaic technology has been used in BOHR.
- In this, the beta particles released from radioactive decay of tritium are directly converted into electrical energy.
- This technology can provide continuous power for long periods of time, especially in places where there is little or no sunlight.
- Such nuclear batteries will be useful in future in places where sunlight does not reach.
- For example, it would be useful for missions to the permanently dark side of the Moon or deep space.
This is believed to be the world’s first commercial nuclear-powered satellite.
