In NCERT’s new book ‘Madhurima’, the picture of the famous ‘dancing girl’ of Indus Valley Civilization has been published in an altered form. In this book, the torso of the idol has been covered with paint, making her appear to be wearing clothes.
According to the report of The Indian Express, the picture of ‘Dancing Girl’ is given in the first chapter ‘History of Arts’ of the 9th class book ‘Madhurima’. In the photo, the area below the shoulders is covered, whereas in the original statue this area appears open. The original form of this bronze statue, which has been in print for 25 years, had never been changed before.
This book is part of NCERT’s new Arts Education Series, which has been prepared under the New Education Policy (NEP) and National Curriculum Framework (NCF). Till now books from class 1 to 9 have been released.
NCERT has published this picture in the book. Some parts of the statue have been covered.
Historian said – this is censorship
Michelle Denino called the changes made to the photo an injustice to the students. He said covering the entire torso of the statue was censorship.
According to Denino, this has shown a statue which actually does not exist anywhere. He raised the question that if the picture is being changed on this logic, will the students be prevented from seeing the original statue kept in the National Museum and other semi-nude or nude historical statues?
NCERT said – no special reason
When asked about the change in the picture, NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani told The Indian Express that there is no specific reason behind it.
He said the picture of ‘dancing girl’ in the Class 6 Social Science book is present in its original form and is one of the major discoveries of the Harappan civilisation.
This picture is printed in NCERT’s class 9th book Madhurima.
Earlier also objection was raised on the picture
Historian Michel Denino had told in an interview to The Indian Express in May that NCERT had objected to the picture of ‘dancing girl’ on the opening page of the chapter on Indus Valley Civilization. Denino was then the head of the textbook development committee of NCERT’s new Class 6 Social Science book.
According to Denino, some people believed that there could be controversy over the nude nature of the statue. Later the picture was removed from the beginning of the chapter and placed in a smaller size on the inside page, but the picture was not removed.
Denino said that if Dancing Girl is not suitable for children, then they should not go to the National Museum, where this statue is kept.

- An approximately 4 inch high bronze statue, known as ‘Dancing Girl’, was found in Mohenjodaro in 1926.
- The idol depicts a young woman with a bun tied up, several bangles in her hands and a necklace around her neck. His posture is considered full of confidence.
- The original statue is kept in the National Museum, New Delhi.
