1. Defense Ministry signed MoU worth Rs 975 crore
On April 21, the Defense Ministry signed an MoU worth about Rs 975 crore with Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Electro-Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Pvt. Ltd.
- Under this MoU, TRAWL assembly equipment will be purchased for T-72 and T-90 tanks.
- This MoU was signed in the presence of Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi.
- TRAWL assemblies are equipment to be installed in T-72 and T-90 tanks, which will increase the anti-mine capability of the Indian Army.
- It will also be used to create a safe lane for vehicles to pass through anti-tank landmines.
- The TRAWL assembly is an indigenous minefield breaching system developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

TRAWL assemblies are mounted forward in tankers.

2. Former Andhra Pradesh CM Nadendla Bhaskar Rao passes away
Former Andhra Pradesh CM N Bhaskar Rao passed away on April 22. He was 91 years old.
- Bhaskar Rao was first elected MLA in 1978 and served as a minister in Chenna Reddy’s cabinet.
- In 1978, Bhaskar Rao contested elections from Vijayawada and won as a Congress MLA.
- Bhaskar Rao later joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), founded by T N Rama Rao.
- In 1983, Bhaskar Rao was elected MLA from Vemuru constituency in Guntur district from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
- In 1984, he took a major political step by rebelling against Telugu Desam Party founder T N Rama Rao and toppling the government.
- Bhaskar became the CM of Andhra Pradesh in 1984. However, his tenure was very short and he could remain in this post only for a month.
- Bhaskar served as minister in NTR, Mary Chenna Reddy and Anjaiah cabinets. In 1998, he was elected MP from Khammam Lok Sabha constituency.
- Bhaskar Rao along with his supporters in TDP and with the support of Congress overthrew the NTR government when NTR was in America due to health emergency.
- After a political coup, Bhaskar Rao became the CM of Andhra Pradesh on August 16, 1984. However, he became the Chief Minister for only 31 days and remained in this post till 17 September 1984.
- After resigning from the post of Chief Minister, Bhaskar Rao formed Prajaswami Telugu Desam Party in 1985.

3. India sent life support medicines to Tanzania
On April 21, India sent 2 tons of life-saving medicines to the East African country Tanzania. These medicines have been sent to Shri Hindu Mandal Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
- These medicines are part of better health and mutual support.
- India’s High Commissioner Bishwadeep Dey met Hospital Trustee Kaushik L. The consignment of medicines has been handed over to Ramaiya.
- This consignment of medicines includes essential equipment like oxygen concentrators, suction units, oximeters, microscopes and stethoscopes as well as essential items like inhalers, syringes, gloves, bandages and wheelchairs.
- This medical consignment will improve the diagnostic capacity, treatment capacity and patient care in the hospital.
- This help is to improve mutual cooperation and health between India and Tanzania. Also, this is to increase diplomatic relations and development.
- These medicines are part of India’s initiative Vaccine Maitri. Which was started by India in 2021.
- India sending medicines to Tanzania is part of the India-Africa Forum Summit framework.
- Africa is India’s energy, trade and maritime partner.

This step of India will promote South Corporation between India and South Africa.

4. Shekha Lake Bird Sanctuary becomes Ramsar site
On April 22, Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav announced to make UP’s Shekha Lake Bird Sanctuary a Ramsar site.
- In a social media post, Yadav said that this is the 12th Ramsar site in the state and the 99th in the country, which brings India closer to a historic century.
- Ramsar sites are wetlands, where a better environment is provided to conserve birds. This convention was signed between India and Iran in 1971.
- Becoming a Ramsar site will provide employment to local people and will also promote climate security.
- This inclusion will boost local livelihoods and global biodiversity as well as water and climate security.
- The sanctuary features the Central Asian Flyway, which is home to migratory birds such as the Bar-headed Goose, Painted Stork and many ducks during the cold season.
- Ramsar site is a wetland which has been given the status of international importance.
- The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is an international agreement made to make dry lands sustainable.
- This agreement was signed in Ramsar, Iran in 1971. India became part of this convention on 1 February 1982.
- Countries joining Ramsar can nominate wetlands, known as Ramsar sites, for areas such as biodiversity, migratory birds, rare species and hydrological environments.
- The name Ramsar comes from the city of Ramsar in Iran, where this treaty was signed.

All Ramsar sites under Ramsar work to conserve rare species at the international level.
5. INS Sunayna reached Jakarta with its crew
On April 21, Indian Navy’s Offshore Patrol Vessel INS Sunayna reached Jakarta, Indonesia and this is the third port call of INS Sunayna.
- INS Sunayna has arrived in Indonesia under the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR Initiative in the Indian Ocean.
- The full name of IOS-SAGAR is Indian Ocean Ship – Security and Growth for All in the Region.
- INS Sunayana has reached Indonesia after passing through major global chokepoints such as the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.
- INS Sunayana has a multinational crew from 16 countries. Who have come together for maritime security.
- This is an initiative of India, which will work together with 16 countries to strengthen maritime security, cooperation and humanitarian support in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
- The objective of this mission is to increase cooperation, maritime surveillance and training with 16 friendly countries amid the ongoing tension and maritime challenges in West Asia (Strait of Hormuz).
- On April 2, INS Sunayna launched the IOS-SAGAR mission from Naval Dockyard, Mumbai and this mission is for 50 days.
- INS Sunayna will call at Colombo in Sri Lanka, Phuket in Thailand, Jakarta in Indonesia, Singapore, Chittagong in Bangladesh, Yangon in Myanmar and Male in the Maldives.
- After this, INS Sunayana will complete its journey and end up in Kochi. There will be training among the sailors at every stop and programs will be organized during the training.
- It is used for maritime security, surveillance and mission-based (such as Operation Southern Readiness) operations in the Indian Ocean.

INS Sunaina is a ‘Saryu-class’ Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) built by Goa Shipyard Limited.
