- CBSE Three Language Policy New Guidelines | Class 9 Students Get Exemption

CBSE on Monday released new guidelines on three language policy. According to this, this year students studying in class 10th will not have to appear for the third language exam.
Those students of class 7, 8 and 9, who have already chosen two foreign languages, will be able to continue with their same languages. However, they will also have to study an Indian language along with it. These students will not have to appear for the third language board exam when they come in 10th. This decision of CBSE has brought relief to 50 lakh students.
First know about the three language policy
Everything you need to know about the new guidelines of CBSE-
- Current Class 10: No changes have been made for session 2026-27. As before, students will take the board exams only with two languages. Neither will you have to study a third language nor will you have to appear in its board exam.
- Current Class 9 : Students of this batch will have to study 3 languages, out of which at least 2 Indian languages will be required. However, when these students reach Class 10 next year, there will be no third language board exam. The third language will be assessed at the school level.
- Current Class 7 and 8: Same arrangement will be there for these students also. Third language will have to be studied, but it will not be examined in 10th board. The evaluation will be done by the school.
- Current Class 6: This will be the first batch on which the three language policy will be fully implemented. These students will have to study three languages from class six and when they reach class 10, they will also have to appear for the board examination of the third language.
These students will get exemption
- Students with disabilities will be exempted from the requirement of third language as per law.
- It will also not be mandatory for CBSE schools located abroad and students returning to India from abroad to study Indian language as a third language.
- If a student’s parents are transferred to another state, the student will be able to continue the languages previously chosen.
Board issued circular on May 15, parents reached Supreme Court
CBSE had issued a circular on May 15 to implement the three language policy from the academic session 2026-27. Protest against this started. A group of 19 people including students, parents and teachers filed a challenge in the Supreme Court. Hearing on this is going on.
The petitioners say that this decision is completely contrary to the earlier decision of CBSE. CBSE had clearly said on April 9 that the third language rule (R3) will not be applicable to class 9 students till the session 2029-30.
New education policy 2020 was brought after 34 years
The New Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) was approved by the Government of India on July 29, 2020. This is a major change in India’s education policy after 34 years. The previous policy was made in 1986, which was updated in 1992. Its objective is to adapt India’s education system to the needs of the 21st century, so that students get practical knowledge and learn skills.
The Center has set a target till 2030 to implement the new education policy. Education is a subject of the concurrent list in the Constitution, over which both the state and central governments have jurisdiction. Therefore, it is not necessary that state governments implement it completely. In case of conflict, both the parties have been suggested to resolve the dispute through consensus.
