Anishka Goyal can see only 10% of the world, that is, she is 90% visually impaired. Still, he has performed better than most students in CBSE.
Anishka from Hathras, Uttar Pradesh has secured 92.6% marks in CBSE 10th board this year, that too not from any quota but from general category.
In a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, Anishka Goyal told her entire journey of board exams…

Anishka had low vision since childhood, which over time reduced her vision to only 10%.
The special aspect of 16 year old Anishka’s story is not just these numbers, but her choices. If she wanted, she could have given the exam from the disabled quota, but she did not do so.
She says, ‘I did not want this, because it all seems very stereotypical to me. There were problems, but I chose to write it myself because no one else could understand how I had visualized answer writing, that is, where to underline, what to write in pointers. He would just write down what I said.
Studied with the help of magnifying device
Anishka had difficulty in reading books straight. If she wanted to read books, she would do so with the help of a magnifying glass. Therefore he has done most of his studies in audio format. She says, ‘I used to make notes by writing whatever seemed important separately in pointers. Also took help of Physicswala’s online study course.
Took frequent breaks to avoid eye strain
Anishka tells that she used to self-study only for 2-3 hours. Never studied continuously, used to take powernap of 10-15 minutes after every half hour. Due to this, there was no strain on the eyes and the concentration also seemed complete.
Two days before the exam everything was looking blurry
Anishka says, ‘Two days before the exam, my digital magnifying glass got damaged. I was very upset then. Because of this I lost 3-4 days before the exam. I was not able to read.
When I tried to read directly without a magnifying glass, my eyes started hurting. Everything started appearing blurry. Due to excessive strain on my eyes, I kept seeing everything blurry for a few days.
Then sometimes my mother and sometimes my younger sister used to read chapters from the book to me. Those people have helped me a lot in my preparation.

Anishka’s mother Shikha Agarwal is a home maker and father Nitin Agarwal is a businessman.
Maths questions were missed in the boards
Anishka says, ‘I used to have a lot of difficulty in maths earlier. Many times, when the answer was wrong, there was difficulty in checking all the steps from the beginning. Due to which many times a single question took half an hour. Because of this, questions of number 3 were missed in the board exam also.
Write the entire exam by holding the exam pad near your eyes.
Anishka takes time to see and read due to 10% vision, hence she took the help of a reader in the exam. He would read out the questions and then Anishka would write the answers.
Anishka had to face a lot of difficulties in writing the exam. One had to write by holding the exam pad in hand and bringing it very close to the eyes. She tells that she has been reading and writing like this since the beginning, so now it has become a habit. Still, sometimes problems do arise.
‘Wanted to become a cardiologist, but couldn’t’
Anishka says, ‘Till 9th, I liked Biology very much. I wanted to become a cardiologist, but could not because of my condition. Now I want to do engineering. So I have taken PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Maths) in 11th.
My parents had asked me to drop Maths, but I told them that I like Maths so I will manage. ‘Now I have to do engineering first and then I want to become an IAS officer.
Teachers bet on my marks
‘My school teachers were already expecting that I would get good marks. Some teachers had even bet that I would get 90 plus percentage. Friends said – We are well and good, yet we could not get the same marks as you. Everyone was very happy.
I became interested in studies during Corona
Anishka was an average student till 6th class. During Covid, he started getting interested in studying at home. The teachers’ teaching in school was also well understood.
Anishka was visually impaired since childhood. She says, ‘Sometimes I become very irritated and frustrated because of my condition. But I like reading so much that these problems seem very small in front of me.
Apart from studies, he likes singing and watching movies.
