Moonlighting in India:
There is no national law on moonlighting in India. Its permission mainly depends on the employment contract, HR policy of the company and applicable labor laws. If the employee works for a competing company or shares confidential information without the company’s permission, it may be considered a breach of contract.

The practice of moonlighting has been around for decades, but it became a topic of discussion in India’s IT sector post COVID-19 (from 2020) and especially from 2022. The purpose of moonlighting is to earn extra income, learn new skills or gain experience.
