1. CETA between India and Britain comes into effect from today

  • The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between India and Britain will come into force on July 15.
  • After implementation of CETA from today, 99% of Indian exporters’ goods will be able to reach the UK market with zero tariff.
  • The benefit of this zero tariff will end on Indian exports like textiles, apparel, leather, gems and jewellery, marine products, engineering.
  • The objective of this agreement is to promote trade, investment, services and economic cooperation between the two countries.
  • With the implementation of CETA, customs duties (tariffs) on many goods between the two countries will be reduced.
  • Along with this, cooperation in IT, financial services, education, health will increase in the service sector.
  • With this, the average tariff on goods imported from UK will reduce from 15% to 3%. Also, 85% of goods will be completely tariff-free in 10 years.
  • Under this agreement, there will be a big reduction in the duty on products like Scotch whiskey, gin, chocolate, biscuits and cosmetics coming to India from Britain.
  • CETA will make it easier for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to access global markets.
  • India and Britain started talks on Free Trade Agreement for the first time in 2022 and 14 rounds of talks have been held in 3 years.
  • On July 24, 2025, the agreement was signed by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and British Trade Minister Jonathan Reynolds in the presence of PM Narendra Modi and his UK counterpart Keir Starmer.
  • Under this agreement, a target was set to double the trade to 100 billion US dollars by 2030.

3. Former Karnataka minister Ramachandra Gowda passes away

  • On July 14, Karnataka minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ramachandra Gowda passed away. He was 88 years old.
  • Ramchandra was also called ‘Bhishma of BJP’. He started his career with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Jan Sangh.
  • Ramachandra played an important role in strengthening the BJP in Karnataka in the 1980s and was the General Secretary of Karnataka BJP for many years.

4. 3000 year old tomb found in Egypt

  • On July 13, archaeologists discovered an ancient tomb in Egypt. This tomb is 3 thousand years old.
  • This tomb dates back to the Pharaoh era i.e. New Kingdom period from approximately 1550 BC to 1069 BC.
  • According to Hisham El, Secretary General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), the owner’s name is written as ‘Paser’ in the inscriptions found on the walls of the tomb.
  • Based on the artefacts and paintings on the walls, it is believed to be an official of the king during the New Kingdom period.
  • It has an open courtyard, an inverted ‘T’ shaped prayer chamber made by cutting rocks and several underground rooms.
  • Special chambers have also been built beneath it for burial, which have been found largely safe even after thousands of years.
  • During the excavation, archaeologists also found a platform made of mud bricks, which is believed to have been used in funeral rituals.
  • Along with this, the stairs leading to the entrance have also been found in good condition. Archaeologists are currently conducting a detailed investigation of this tomb.

5. Ukraine and 9 countries of Europe form defense alliance

  • On July 13, Ukraine and nine countries in Europe formed a new defense alliance to deal with Russia’s ballistic missile threat.
