If the vehicle gets damaged due to 20% ethanol mix petrol, the companies will replace the parts for free. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the government has instructed the companies to replace the parts of old vehicles (before 2023) affected by E20 fuel without any extra charge.
He told The Indian Express that reports on social media of vehicles being damaged or damaged due to E20 fuel are false and a false narrative. However, he admitted that the mileage of old vehicles is low.
Rubber washers will be changed free of cost during servicing
Gadkari said that earlier the washers in old cars going for servicing were made of metal, whereas now they are being made of rubber. We have given strict instructions to the companies to replace these washers during servicing without charging any extra from the customers.

News circulating on social media is fabricated and false
Gadkari completely rejected the claims of ethanol damaging vehicles. He challenged, “Show me even one car that has been damaged or destroyed by E20 fuel.
Whatever is being circulated on social media is a false narrative prepared under a well-planned strategy. So far, no car has been found which has stopped due to this E20 petrol.”
Gadkari stated 5 special things
- Better than petrol in performance: Ethanol has a high octane number and has better anti-knocking properties i.e. the ability to prevent noise in the engine. I have been promoting it since 2004.
- Reason for low mileage: Mileage is slightly less than E20 petrol, because the calorific value (ie energy capacity) of ethanol is lower than petrol.
- Traffic impact: In cities like Delhi-Mumbai, vehicles run in lower gears due to stop-and-go traffic, which reduces mileage, but the difference will be noticeable at a constant speed of 100kmph on the highway.
- No problem with flex engine: According to ARAI report, there is no mileage problem in specially made flex-fuel engines. About 12 companies in the country are now working on the flex model.
- Brazilian model and price of ₹75: Brazil has been using 27% ethanol blend since 1970. The government aims to provide the public with a choice of fuel blends at different prices; Currently the price of ethanol is around ₹75/litre.
Why is there opposition to E20 petrol in India?
There is opposition in India against this mixture of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol (E20). Especially the owners of petrol vehicles manufactured before 2023 are worried. They claim that with this fuel the mileage of vehicles is decreasing, maintenance costs have increased and engine parts are getting damaged quickly.

Government’s claim – E-20 petrol does not harm vehicles: Testing done before selling; It was said in the Supreme Court – Experiment now, the result will be known next year.

Amidst the protests over mixing ethanol in petrol, the government on Saturday said that the work of ethanol blending was not done overnight. It is a tried-and-tested, scientific and step-by-step process and does not cause any harm to the vehicles. Global practice of mixing it in petrol has been adopted and top agencies have also tested it.
Vartika Shukla, an expert from the government, said this in the press conference of industry experts held in Delhi on ethanol blending. Vartika Shukla told that during the years 2013 and 2014, only 1.5% ethanol was being mixed in petrol in the country. Read the full news…
