The National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to close all PG diploma medical courses in the country and replace them with post graduate degree courses like MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery). The move aims to bring PG medical education in the country at par with global standards.

Opportunity for direct admission in degree course

The seats which were till now fixed for PG Diploma program will be converted into MD and MS seats. With this, students will get the opportunity to get direct admission in degree course instead of diploma. NMC believes that this will improve the quality and training level of specialist doctors. Besides, students will also get better career opportunities.

The process of converting MD and MS seats will start soon.

To implement this change, the Post Graduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) has issued instructions to all medical colleges. Colleges will have to start the process of converting their diploma seats into MD and MS seats soon. For this process they will have to apply to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB).

To ease the process, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) is also going to launch a special online portal soon, through which institutions will be able to apply.

Why was this decision considered necessary?

NMC believes that the need of the hour is to make the level of postgraduate medical education uniform in the country. At present, some medical colleges are running both diploma and degree courses in the same subject. Whereas many institutions have only diploma programs.

The Commission argues that the institutions where diploma courses are running already have adequate faculty, infrastructure and availability of patients. In such a situation, seats can be changed in MD and MS programs by using these resources. This will increase the quality of medical education and the country will be able to get more trained specialist doctors.
