1. Resignation of Britain PM Keir Starmer
- On June 22, British PM Keir Starmer resigned from the post of PM.
- Outside 10 Downing Street he addressed the nation and informed of his decision.
- The party’s poor performance in the recent local elections is being considered as the reason for this.
- Starmer is the 5th British PM to step down before the completion of his term in the last 7 years.
- Before Starmer, David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have also left the post mid-term.
- Starmer led the Labor Party to a major election victory in 2024.
- According to the report, Andy Burnham is the frontrunner to become his successor.
2. Tenure of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta extended
- On June 22, the Central Government has extended the tenure of senior advocate Tushar Mehta by three years.
- Now Tushar will hold the post of Solicitor General of India from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2029.
- This will be his fourth consecutive and second longest tenure so far.
- Before Tushar, C.K. Daftari was the longest serving Solicitor General (13 years).
- The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the extension of Tushar’s tenure.
- Tushar Mehta was appointed Solicitor General of India for the first time in the year 2018.
- Tushar’s tenure has been continuously extended to 2020, 2023 and now 2026.
- In 1987, Tushar registered himself as an advocate with the Gujarat Bar Council.
- In the year 2008, Tushar was appointed Additional Advocate General of Gujarat Government.
- In the year 2014, Tushar was appointed Additional Solicitor General of the Government of India.
- The Solicitor General is the second most senior law officer of the Government of India.
- The only post above the Solicitor General is that of the Attorney General of India.
- The government has also extended the tenure of five Additional Solicitors General (ASG) working in the Supreme Court by three years.
The new tenure of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta will come into effect from July 1.

3. Women’s hockey team wins FIH Nations Cup 2026
- On June 21, the Indian women’s hockey team won the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup 2026 title.
- In the final match, India won the trophy by defeating the host team New Zealand 2-0.
- Lalremsiami was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ for his brilliant performance in the final match.
- Forward player Deepika was the joint top scorer of the tournament with six goals.
- Deepika shared this score with Ashley Sessa of USA.
- After winning the FIH Nations Cup, India has been promoted again to the FIH Pro League for the 2026-27 season.
- The tournament will also serve as the LA 2028 Olympic qualifier for hockey.
- The matches against world number 10 New Zealand were played from 15 to 21 June at the North Harbor National Hockey Centre, Auckland.
This is India’s second Nations Cup title, before this India had won this title in 2022.
4. ICC issues return to play post-pregnancy guidelines
- The International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued ‘Return to Play Post-Pregnancy Guidelines’ for women cricketers.
- This initiative is being considered an important step towards promoting the career of players in women’s cricket.
- In this, 6-R framework has been released. In this, a process will be adopted to ensure safe return.
- The 6-R framework includes Ready, Review, Restore, Recondition, Return and Refine.
- Along with this, a case manager will be appointed in each board, who will support the entire system from pregnancy to return, along with a doctor or physiotherapist.
- To provide practical support, the training environment will be designed to include child care, space to feed/care for children during matches and travel support.
- Declaring pregnancy will completely depend on the wishes of the player and there is no mandatory pregnancy test rule laid down by the board.
- After the birth of the child, there will be psychological support, medical review, and a gradual return to cricket training.
5. Vaibhav Suryavanshi made a record of half-century
- On June 21, Vaibhav Suryavanshi scored a half-century (50) in 11 balls. He has become the first player to score the fastest half-century.
- Vaibhav has achieved this feat in the final of the ongoing series between India List-A and Sri Lanka List-A.
- The fastest half century in 50 over cricket was scored by Kaushalya Veeratne of Sri Lanka. Kaushalya had completed fifty in 12 balls while playing for Ragama Cricket Club in 2006.
- India-A also won the tri-series by defeating Sri Lanka-A by 66 runs in the final.
- There are two types of matches in 50 over cricket at the senior level.
- List-A and One Day Internationals. The record of fastest fifty in One Day International is in the name of AB de Villiers and Matthew Ford.
- Both the batsmen had completed half-centuries in 16-16 balls.
Vaibhav played an inning of 94 runs in 29 balls.
6. America approved aid of Rs 4,100 crore
- On June 22, the US approved a defense assistance package of US $ 482.2 million (approximately Rs 4,100 crore) for India.
- This package is to strengthen the maintenance, logistics and operations capability of India’s AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and M777A2 ultra-light howitzers.
- This approval has been given by the American Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).
- No weapons will be purchased from this package, rather emphasis will be laid on maintenance of the weapons present in the system.
- This includes spare parts, technical assistance, training, engineering services and logistics support.
- This step will strengthen India-US defense cooperation.
The estimated cost of the support package for Apache is $198.2 million.
7. Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar’s visit to Mongolia and South Korea
- On June 22, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar is on a four-day official visit to Mongolia and South Korea.
- S Jaishankar will first reach Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia.
- The aim of the visit is to further India’s ‘Special Strategic Partnership’ with Mongolia.
- After Mongolia, S Jaishankar will reach South Korea.
- There will be discussion on investment, business and defense security in South Korea.
- There can be talks on cooperation with South Korea in semiconductor and high technology sector.
- India is strengthening relations with these countries under its ‘Act East Policy’.
- During this visit, there will be special discussions on mineral resources and cultural relations with Mongolia.
