1. Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit India
- On May 20, Russia’s government news agency TASS informed that President Vladimir Putin will come to India to attend BRICS 2026.
- The 18th BRICS 2026 Summit will be held on 12 and 13 September in New Delhi.
- The theme of BRICS 2026 is ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Corporation and Sustainability’.
- On January 13, India officially took over the chairmanship of the 18th BRICS Summit.
- Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar had launched the theme, logo and website of BRICS 2026.
- India is chairing BRICS for the fourth time this year. Earlier, he has presided in 2012, 2016 and 2021.
- The name BRICS is made up of the initial letters of its founding member countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
- Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE and Indonesia later became full members of the BRICS Forum.
- 2026 marks the completion of 20 years of the establishment of BRICS. The first summit of BRICS was held in Russia in 2009.

Russian President Putin had earlier visited New Delhi in December 2025 for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.
2. PM Modi held bilateral talks in Italy
- On May 20, PM Modi reached Italy on the last leg of his Europe visit.
- PM met Italy’s PM Georgia Meloni.
- India and Italy will partner together in sectors like advanced manufacturing, infrastructure, energy, space, defence, critical minerals, agriculture, maritime transport, tourism and culture.
- In this partnership, a target has been set to increase the trade between India and Italy to 20 billion dollars by 2029.
- In 2025, there was a trade of about 16.77 billion dollars between India and Italy.
- From April 2000 to September 2025, Italy has invested $3.66 billion in India.

In the meeting between India and Italy, PM Modi and Meloni talked about special strategic partnership.
3. International Booker Prize for ‘Taiwan Travelogue’
- On May 19, the English translation of Taiwanese writer Yang Shuang-ji’s book Taiwan Travelogue was selected for the International Booker Prize.
- The English translation of ‘Taiwan Travelogue’ has been done by Taiwanese translator ‘Lin King’.
- This is the first time a book translated from Mandarin has received the Booker Award.
- Taiwan Travelogue is a romance set during Japanese-occupied Taiwan in the 1930s.
- The Booker Prize is awarded to books originally written in English or translated into English, published in Britain or Ireland.
- The International Booker Prize gives 50 thousand US dollars, which is divided equally between the writer and the translator.
- The Booker Prize was started to give global recognition to fiction literature in other languages.
- In 2025, the translation of ‘Heart Lamp’, a collection of short stories by India’s famous Kannada writer Banu Mushtaq, received the International Booker Prize.
- So far, a total of 5 Indian writers have received the Original Booker and 2 have received the Translated International Booker.

4. DRDO successfully tested UAV missile
- On May 19, the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully tested the drone-launched missile ‘U-LPGM V3’.
- This testing took place in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. The full name of the missile is UAV-Launched Precision Guided Missile Version 3.
- The missile has been completely developed in India. Its maximum range is 10 kilometers.
- The U-LPGM V3 or UAV missile has air-to-air and air-to-ground strike capability.
- The missile is equipped with fire and forget capability, that is, after locking the target and firing, it itself attacks the target.

UAV missiles can target tanks and armored vehicles.
5. AYUSH Ministry launches AYUSH Grant Portal
- On May 19, the Ministry of AYUSH launched ‘AYUSH Grant Portal’.
- The objective of this portal is to make the system of grant under AYUSH scheme simple and transparent.
- Applications for grants and their status can be checked online through the portal.
- The portal will help in reducing corruption in the grants being given to the people coming under the AYUSH scheme.
- AYUSH Grant Portal is part of Digital India. Under this, all the departments are being made online.
- The proposal sent for AYUSH grant can be submitted online on the portal.
- After the process, the applications will be approved online and the application can also be tracked immediately.
- This will increase transparency and all processes can be done easily digitally.
- The Government of India launched the National AYUSH Mission (NAM) on 15 September 2014.

6. NADA banned two athletes for 3 years each
- On May 20, the National Anti-Doping Agency i.e. NADA banned two runners Ankit and Jayesh Patil for 3 years each.
- Banned substance ‘Meldonium’ was found positive in the dope test of Ankit and Jayesh.
- During the ban, these players will not be able to participate in any national or international competition.
- Ankit and Jayesh have confessed to taking Meldonium, after which their ban has been reduced by one year.
- In the 69th National Cross Country Championship, Ankit came third while Jayesh came fifth.
- Ankit is from Services Sports Control Board (SSCB), while Jayesh Patil is a Railways sprinter.
