1. 22 ministers took oath in Bihar cabinet
On May 7, the cabinet of CM Samrat Chaudhary was expanded in Bihar.
- In the mega event, 32 ministers including Nitish’s son Nishant Kumar joined the Samrat cabinet.
- The new cabinet has 15 ministers from BJP, 13 from JDU, LJP(R)-2, one each from HAM and RLM.
- Nishant Kumar, Shravan Kumar, Vijay Sinha, Lacey Singh, and Dilip Jaiswal took oath for the first time. Nishant Kumar has become a minister for the first time.
- PM Modi also attended the ceremony. 15 ministers from BJP quota have taken oath in the Samrat cabinet.
- There are 5 new faces among them, while three old people did not get a chance this time. After not giving ministerial post to Mangal Pandey, he will get a big responsibility in the BJP organization.
- These include senior BJP leader Mangal Pandey, Begusarai’s Bachwada MLA Surendra Mehta and Pt. Narayan Prasad has been removed from the post from Champaran.

There are 5 women ministers in the Samrat Cabinet, out of which maximum 3 ministers are from JDU.
2. Shashi Shekhar Vempati becomes Chairman of CBFC
On May 6, former Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati was appointed chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
- Shekhar replaces Prasoon Joshi, who was recently appointed chairman of Prasar Bharati.
- Vempati was the CEO of Rajya Sabha TV from 2017 to 2019.
- Vempati was the CEO of Prasar Bharati from 2017 to 2022, after which he held various positions in the University Grants Commission (UGC), television rating agency BARC and Science Enough Technology.
- Vempati is the co-founder of AI4India, which works to promote a domestic AI ecosystem.
- Vempati is also on the board of BharatGen, an IIT Bombay-incubated initiative that is working on Indic language-based AI models.
- Vempati received the Padma Shri from the government in 2026 for his contribution to media, technology and public service.

Vempati worked at Infosys for 15 years.
3. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh participated in the Joint Defense Conference
On May 7, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief of Defense Staff General Anil Chauhan attended the Joint Commanders Summit in Jaipur.
- This two-day summit will be on the theme ‘Military Capability in New Domains’. Operation Sindoor also completed one year on 7th May.
- The Defense Ministry said that this summit is to evaluate the challenges and enhance decisive understanding in the emerging areas of cyber, space and war related understanding.
- In this summit, there will be discussion on war related information and AI-based military system.
- The objective of this summit is to develop technology for unmanned systems and warfare in the future.
- In the summit, there will be talk on making defense production indigenous and self-reliant.
- Issues related to civil military fusion and developing innovation ecosystem will be discussed.
- In future, defense applications to be made in the country will be displayed in the summit.

Senior commanders of the Army, Navy and Air Force participated in this summit.

4. CNN founder Ted Turner passes away
On May 7, Ted Turner, the founder of CNN i.e. Cable News Network, passed away. He was 87 years old.
- Cable News Network (CNN) began in 1980. This is the world’s first 24-hour news channel.
- Ted transformed cable television and remains one of the most influential figures in global media.
- Along with CNN, Turner also launched the cartoon network, Turner Classic Movies (TNC).
- CNN gained worldwide recognition for its live coverage of the 1990-91 Gulf War.
- Turner has also been the owner of several large businesses and professional sports teams.

Turner attended Brown University but did not complete his graduation.

5. Minister Jitendra Singh met the Science Minister of Japan
On May 6, Minister of State Jitendra Singh took oath as the Science and Technology Minister of Japan in New Delhi.
- In this meeting many sectors like health and medical devices were discussed.
- In this meeting, we will strengthen India’s national mission in quantum technology, cyber-physical systems, electric mobility, clean energy and better computing.
- This will increase joint research, co-development and industrial partnership.
- India and Japan aim to reduce global independence on medicines and create stable access to medical and pharmaceuticals.
- The Ministry of Science and Technology said in a statement that the MoU in the field of health and medical devices was signed in the meeting.
- Along with this, mutual cooperation in quantum science and technology was agreed upon.

India and Japan work together in science and technology.
6. Joint commission meeting of India and Algeria was held
The first meeting of the Joint Commission between India and Algeria was held on 6 May.
- It was co-chaired by Joint Secretary Amitabh Prasad and Chief of Naval Staff Major General Quaid Noor Edin.
- The Indian delegation included officers from the three services, Integrated Defense Staff, Department of Defense Production, DRDO, Armed Forces Medical Services and officials of the Ministry of External Affairs.
- During the meeting, both the heads talked about training, military exercises, medical cooperation and defense industry.
- India and Algeria have agreed for defense partnership. Both countries signed for India-Algeria defense cooperation.
- Both countries will also serve as a guiding framework for the Joint Commission meetings.

India had signed a defense deal in 2024, after which relations between India and Algeria have further improved.
7. Protocol released for Vande Mataram song
On May 6, the Central Government has decided to give Vande Mataram the same status as the national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’. The government also released guidelines for the official protocol for singing the national song Vande Mataram.
- According to the new guidelines, the full version of Vande Mataram should be played during state functions.
- This decision was taken in the first meeting of the cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi after BJP’s victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections.
- The meeting also approved the proposal to amend the Prevention of Insults to National Honor Act.
- After the Cabinet decision, the same rules and restrictions will now apply to Vande Mataram composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, which are currently applicable to the national anthem.
- Now there will be punishment in case of insulting or obstructing the singing of Vande Mataram. Currently, there is a provision of jail, fine or both for insulting the national flag, constitution and national anthem.
- Under the new protocol, now Vande Mataram has also been included in it.
- The government is making this change on the occasion of completion of 150 years of Vande Mataram. For this, section 3 of the law will be amended.
- According to Section 3, if any person intentionally obstructs or prevents the singing of the national anthem, he can be punished with imprisonment of up to three years or fine or both.
- India’s national song Vande Mataram was written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee on 7 November 1875.
- Vande Mataram was first printed in the magazine Bangadarshan in 1882 as part of his novel Anandamath.
- Rabindranath Tagore sang Vande Mataram on stage at the session of the Indian National Congress in 1896.
- This was the first time that this song was sung publicly at the national level. The eyes of thousands of people present in the meeting became moist.
