1. Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha joins BJP

On April 24, AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab Raghav Chadha announced to join BJP.

2. Government approved mixing ethanol in aviation fuel

On April 23, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has approved ethanol blending in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF).

  • The government has changed the ATF marketing rules by issuing a notification. This decision will reduce India’s dependence on foreign oil.

  • According to the notification of the ministry, the definition of aviation turbine fuel has been updated.
  • According to the new update, along with hydrocarbons, synthesized components (such as ethanol) can also be included in ATF.
  • This change of the government has been made keeping in mind the growing trend of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at the international level.
  • SAF is an alternative fuel that can be prepared from cooking oil, agricultural residues and waste. Ethanol mixture also plays an important role in this.
  • The biggest feature of SAF is that its use does not require major changes in the aircraft engine or the existing fuel supply system.

3. Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar meets Jonathan Powell

On April 23, Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh met United Kingdom (UK) National Security Advisor Jonathan Powell in New Delhi.

4. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare signs MoU for medicines

On April 24, the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) signed an MoU with the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) and the National Institute of Pharmaceuticals Education and Research (NIPER), Hajipur, to ensure quality, research and patient safety of medicines.

  • According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, this MoU has been done to strengthen the healthcare ecosystem.
  • Under this MoU, the quality of medicines, patient safety, proper use of medicines and innovation in pharmaceuticals will be strengthened.
  • These medicines will be given under PM Bharatiya Janaushadhi Scheme (PMBJP). The objective of this MoU is to increase the quality of medicines.
  • Under this MoU, PMBI will send random samples of Jan Aushadhi medicines to IPC for quality test.
  • National Formulary of India will be promoted in Jan Aushadhi Kendras for correct usage of medicines.
  • So that the side effects of medicines can be reduced through better pharmacovigilance system.
  • Pharmacovigilance Program of India (PBPI) will also run QR codes and toll-free helplines.
  • The objective of this MoU is to increase people’s confidence in affordable generic medicines and patients can get better health benefits.

5. Korean actor Lee Nam-hee passes away

South Korean actor Lee Nam-hee passed away on April 22. He was 64 years old. He acted in the Korean industry for 4 decades.

  • Lee debuted as an actor in 1983 at the age of 21 in the drama Antigone.
  • Lee became famous through theatre. His famous theater plays are Antigone, Male Impulse, Othello (2009) and Death of a Salesman (2016).

Miscellaneous 6. India will give 30 billion to Maldives for SAARC

On April 23, India sanctioned Rs 30 billion to Maldives as the first tranche under the SAARC Currency Swap Framework.

  • SAARC Currency Swap Framework is a kind of emergency loan system between SAARC countries. SAARC countries include India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
  • The SAARC Currency Swap Framework will be provided under the MoU signed between the Government of Maldives.
  • India will give this fund to Maldives through Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  • This will be the first tranche of the SAARC Currency Swap Framework, which is being issued through RBI.
  • The SAARC Currency Swap Framework MoU was signed during the visit of Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu to India in October 2024.
  • Following the bilateral agreement between RBI and Maldives Monetary Authority in October 2024, India had sanctioned $400 million to Maldives for the dollar swap window.
  • After the completion of that sanction by RBI, India has sanctioned these rupees to create INR swap window facility.
  • The objective of the SAARC Currency Swap Framework is to provide short-term foreign exchange facilities to SAARC countries in times of need.
  • Maldives is suffering from shortage of foreign exchange reserves and severe balance of payments pressure.
  • The SAARC Currency Swap Framework will strengthen economic cooperation among SAARC countries.
  • It was initiated in November 2012, it has been revised for 2024-2027. In this, INR swap window has been introduced to internationalize the Indian rupee.
  • All SAARC countries can take advantage of this system by signing bilateral agreements with India. Can exchange currency with each other on the terms fixed in the agreement.

7. ‘Oscars of Science’ 2026 award to Dr. Atanu On April 23, Professor Dr. Atanu Nath from Assam received the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics Award 2026, known as the Oscars of Science.

  • Dr. Atanu Nath has received this award for his experiment on the magnetic movement of Muon g-2 particle. In this he got 3 million dollars prize money.
  • The experiment on Muon g-2 took place at CERN, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Fermilab, where 376 scientists from all over the world participated, including 11 Indian researchers.
  • Dr. Atanu Nath is the first Indian to receive the Oscars of Science. And he is an Assistant Professor of Physics at Assam Tihu College.
  • Dr. Atanu has done Bachelors in Physics from GC College Silchar in 2007.
  • In 2010, Atanu did his Masters in Physics from SN Bose National Center for Basic Sciences.
  • In 2013, Atanu was a research scholar at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.
  • From 2016 to 2020, he was part of the Italian Collaboration Team on the g-2 Particle at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Batavia II at INFN, Italy.
