The Supreme Court has given a strict verdict regarding APAAR ID. The court says that no school can itself make unique IDs for children. For this, consent of parents is necessary.
Bhuvaneshwar’s parents filed a petition
Bhubaneswar Consent was sought from Rohit Anand Das, parents of children studying in a private school, to create APAAR ID. There was no option of refusal or acceptance in the consent form. The parents filed a petition against this in the Odisha High Court.

The government is saying that APAAR ID is voluntary, but there is no option of refusal in the consent form. Sharing Aadhaar and other personal information may affect privacy. Merely having the option to withdraw consent later is not sufficient. There should also be a right of first refusal.
Government’s decision in favor of parents
The central and state governments told the court that APAAR ID is completely voluntary. If the parents wish, they can not give consent and can also withdraw the consent later. In many cases of APAAR ID, information such as student’s height, weight can also be recorded. For this reason, parental consent has been made mandatory for minor students.
Students’ rights will not be affected
The petition also demanded that if a student does not get APAAR ID made, he should not be denied admission, registration in examinations, mark sheets, certificates or any other academic facility.
APAAR ID 12 digit student identification
AAPAR ID (Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry) is a 12 digit permanent digital student identity (student ID) given to every student under the ‘One Nation, One Student ID’ initiative of the Government of India.
It has been developed in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the concept of Academic Bank of Credits (ABC). Its objective is to keep the entire academic record of the student safe on a single digital platform.
Government’s claim – scheme in the interest of students
The government and CBSE say that APAAR ID has been created for the convenience of students. Its objective is to keep the complete academic records of the students safe on a single digital platform so that in future they do not have to submit documents again and again. The government claims that this scheme is completely in the interest of the students and will make the education system more transparent and easier.
The risk of data leakage may increase
The petitioners and many experts have also raised some serious concerns regarding this scheme. He says that collecting such a large amount of digital data of children in one place can increase the risk of data leakage.
If the data is misused for any reason then the privacy of children can be affected. Apart from this, many parents say that if APAAR ID is made mandatory then children without ID may face problems in education and examinations.
