1. Andy Burnham becomes PM of Britain
- On 20 July, Labor Party leader Andy Burnham took charge as the 59th PM of Britain.

- Burnham replaces former PM Keir Starmer and has also previously been the Mayor of Manchester.

2. Spain wins FIFA World Cup 2026
- On July 20, Spain won the Football World Cup title after 16 years.

4. India-Sri Lanka DTAA amended
- On 19 July, the Government of India implemented amendments to the India-Sri Lanka Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA).
- This notification has been issued on July 16 and this will strengthen the tax partnership between India and Sri Lanka.
- This change has been made to stop treaty shopping. Following this rule, the benefit of DTAA will not be given in any transaction or arrangement.
- After this rule, if any person or company does any shopping to save tax, then it will not get the benefit of the treaty.
- Treaty shopping is a method in which people try to reduce taxes by traveling through a third country.
- In India, this rule will be applicable from the financial year 2027-28 (FY28) and this amendment is to promote economic cooperation.
- The DTAA has been amended based on the BEPS (Base Erosion and Profit Shifting) standards of OECD/G20.
- There was already DTAA between India and Sri Lanka. The two countries have updated the old treaty to thwart tax evasion and artificial structures around the world.
5. Madhya Pradesh Cabinet approves UCC
- On July 19, Madhya Pradesh Cabinet has approved the proposal to implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.
- This decision was taken in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
- Madhya Pradesh is the second state in the country after Uttarakhand to approve UCC.
- The purpose of UCC is to create uniform laws for all citizens in matters such as marriage, divorce and property.
- Now this bill will be introduced in the monsoon session of Madhya Pradesh Assembly.
- However, the government has kept Scheduled Tribes out of the scope of this law because of their beliefs.
- Article 44 of the Indian Constitution directs the State to implement the Uniform Civil Code within the Directive Principles of State Policy.
Uniform Civil Code (UCC)
- A law in which uniform civil law applies to all citizens in matters such as marriage, divorce, succession, adoption and maintenance, instead of separate personal laws based on religion or community.
- The UCC Bill was introduced in the Assembly on 6 February 2024. Passed on 7 February 2024. On 11 March 2024, the President assent to the UCC Bill.
5. Bengali language is mandatory in government work in West Bengal
- On July 20, West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari made Bengali language compulsory in all government work in the state.
- Now from September 1, Bengali language will be mandatory in all government works and communication related works of the state government.
- The report of Justice Sushant Chatterjee Commission constituted by the government will also be made public.
- In the report, complete information about the Commission’s recommendations and which of those suggestions were implemented will be placed before the public.
- Bengali will be mandatory in all government works, applications, forms, certificates and portals. However, correspondence with the Central Government will continue in Hindi language.
- The department related to official language comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
- It will be operated by the bilingual software ‘Anuvad Sarathi’ of the Indian Language Section, which will be able to translate all the work as per the need.
- This step has been taken to promote Bengali language in administrative work in West Bengal and to strengthen the linguistic and cultural identity of the state.
- This announcement has been made after Home Minister Amit Shah had sent a letter written in Bengali to CM Suvendu to promote the conservation, promotion, development and study of Bengali language.

5. Manipuri film director Oken Amakcham passes away
- On July 19, famous Manipuri film director and actor Okene Amakcham passed away. He was 64 years old.
- Oken directed his first film Konthang in 1992, which was entered into the Indian Film Festival of India.
- In 1994, Oken’s film Myope Gi Macha received the 42nd National Award for Best Manipur Feature Film.
- Oken was also a member of the 58th National Film Awards jury. Along with this, he was also the Vice President of Film Forum Manipur.
- Okene was nominated in 2002 for his direction of Lammei, considered to be the first commercially released digital film of Manipuri cinema.
Apart from being an actor, Oken was also a music director.
