NCERT Class 8 Social Science Book Revised

National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has released the revised book of Class 8 Social Science (Part-2). The name of this book is Exploring Society: India and Beyond. It presents subjects like history, geography, civics and economy in an integrated form.

This book was earlier released on 23 February 2026. It was withdrawn due to controversial content related to the judiciary. Now in the new edition the entire chapter written on judiciary has been rewritten. The offline sale of this book was stopped from 24 February.

Book rewritten on the orders of Supreme Court

During the hearing related to this book, NCERT apologized to the court and admitted that some wrong content had been included in the book. After this, the Supreme Court had banned the distribution of both print and digital editions of the book. Also instructions were given to rewrite the concerned chapter. Now after the same order the revised book has been published.

In the new book, the chapter titled “Role of Judiciary in Society” has been completely redesigned. While earlier there was mention of issues like challenges of the judiciary, pendency of cases and corruption, now all these parts have been removed.

In its place, now the role of the Supreme Court in protecting the Constitution, access of common people to justice, systems like Public Interest Litigation (PIL), Tribunal and Alternative Dispute Resolution have been explained in detail.

PIL explained with example

For the first time in the new book, Public Interest Litigation has been explained in detail. It states that under Articles 32 and 226 of the Constitution, the court can be approached in the interest of the general public.

Students should take the Hussainara Khatoon case as an example, which opened the way for the release of undertrial prisoners. M.C. Information about Mehta’s environment related matters and Vishakha decision is also given. This is the same Vishakha judgment which laid down guidelines against sexual harassment of women at the workplace.

Names of 3 experts were removed

The team that prepared the old book included the names of 51 experts, but the revised edition has only 48 names. In this, the names of Michelle Denino, Suparna Diwakar and Alok Prasanna Kumar have been removed. However, later the Supreme Court acknowledged that preparing a textbook is a collective process and no single person can be held responsible for it. The court had also amended its earlier order.

After the controversy, the government made many major changes

After this entire controversy, the Education Ministry formed a monitoring committee under the chairmanship of former Supreme Court judge Justice Indu Malhotra. In this, former Attorney General K.K. Venugopal and Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University Vice Chancellor Prakash Singh were also inducted.

Also, the head of the National Judicial Academy was also included in the review process of the school curriculum related to the judiciary. On the other hand, NCERT also reconstituted its course preparation committee. Besides, changes were also made in the process of approval, publication and distribution of books.

NCERT has prepared new books for all classes under the National Curriculum Framework i.e. NCF and NEP-2020. After the Corona epidemic, new topics are being added to the books by changing the topics of old books. New books from class 1st to 8th have been published in 2025 itself.
