Doctors Long Shifts Pain | FAIMA Report 2026

Recently, a survey by the Federation of India Medical Association has come out which explains the pain of doctors due to their long shifts and work. Shocking facts have emerged in an online survey of 1,260 resident doctors.

1,260 resident doctors from 28 states and union territories of the country participated in this anonymous online survey. The results of the survey were worrying. About 87.5% of the participants admitted that they often or sometimes felt symptoms of burnout.

According to reports, many young doctors have to work continuously for 24 to 36 hours. During this time they do not even get a chance to sit properly, eat food or rest for a while. Lack of sleep and continuous work is having a direct impact on their body and mental condition.

FAIMA has openly said in its statement that this deadly workload has now become a terrible reality for doctors, which is being ignored by the system.

The problems of medical students are also no less. This problem is not limited to hospitals only. The condition of students who are going to coaching centers with the dream of becoming doctors is no less bad. Safety standards are being flouted in many big coaching centers providing medical preparation.

The report has emphasized that many coaching centers are running in cramped basements, where there is neither any safe way out in case of fire nor proper arrangement for ventilation. Despite charging huge fees worth lakhs of rupees, students have to study sitting for hours in such dangerous and suffocating places.

The organization has made a strong appeal to the Ministry of Education to immediately intervene in this matter and stop this playing with the lives of students.

FMG counseling increased stress

The problems of resident doctors and students do not end here. The delay in the system is spoiling both their career and peace of mind. Delay in internship of Foreign Medical Graduates (FMG) is adversely affecting the entire healthcare system.

Due to lack of timely training, the future of young doctors hangs in the balance. The unnecessary delay in Super Specialty (NEET SS) counseling has increased the mental stress among young doctors. Uncertainty, lack of sleep and heavy workload have completely destroyed the work-life balance of doctors, due to which depression and anxiety are increasing rapidly.

The doctors who participated in the survey also pointed out the severe shortage of staff in hospitals. Due to non-availability of doctors and nurses as per requirement, the workload on the resident doctors doubles-triples.

The surprising thing is that these doctors not only have to treat the patients, but also have to do many administrative tasks which have no direct relation with the treatment.

Not only doctors, patients are also in danger

According to this report, in all this the doctor not only loses his health, but due to this the safety of the patients also gets at stake. If the doctor is awake for many hours continuously and is treating, then the possibility of error may increase.

The organization believes that if reforms are not made in time, it can have a direct impact on the quality of health services and medical education in the country.
