After the exam agency NTA, now UPSC is also facing opposition from students. UPSC Civil Services Prelims exam was held on 24 May 2026. Candidates have described this year’s paper as the toughest paper of UPSC till date.
Candidates, students and coaching experts are angry about its pattern. This year, fewer candidates have qualified as compared to 2025. A total of 14,161 candidates were qualified in UPSC Prelims Exam 2025. This year 13,343 candidates have passed this examination. This year there are many students who could not qualify the exam due to tough and changed exam pattern.

Protest and uproar in Delhi
Even before the result, some candidates had created a huge protest and ruckus in Old Rajendra Nagar area of Delhi regarding the UPSC Prelims exam pattern. Candidates say that this time the pattern of questions was quite different from previous years, longer and more difficult than expected.
According to reports, unannounced changes in the UPSC Prelims question paper affected the preparation of candidates based on each year’s paper. Due to this, even eligible candidates could not qualify the exam.

Candidates demanded re-examination
Congress’s student wing NSUI had alleged irregularities and paper leaks in the UPSC Prelims exam. The students’ organization claimed that 82 out of 100 questions of Prelims were matching exactly with the study material uploaded in the last seven months by a coaching institute named ‘Anantam IAS’. On this basis, a demand was made for fair investigation and re-examination.
Five and a half lakh students gave prelims exam
Protests among students regarding this exam, including on social media, increased when NEET-UG paper leak and CBSE’s on-screen marking system remains an issue across the country. This year approximately 5.5 lakh candidates had given the UPSC Prelims exam.
Exam was held in 2 shifts on 24th May
UPSC Prelims Exam was conducted on 24 May 2026 across the country. The examination was conducted in offline mode through OMR sheets in two shifts. General Studies (GS) paper was held in the first shift, while CSAT was held in the second shift.
Recruitment will be done on 933 posts
This year 8.19 lakh candidates had registered for UPSC Prelims exam. After the interview, recruitment will be done on total 933 posts. This exam was conducted at 2,072 centers in 83 cities. .
Answer key released four days after the exam
This time UPSC took a new step by releasing the provisional answer key on May 28, just four days after the exam. Earlier, usually the answer key was released after the entire examination process was over. It was also told in the released answer key that out of 100 questions, one question has been removed.
Mains exam on 21st August
Mains exam will be conducted by UPSC on 21st August. Mains consists of 9 question papers. Candidates who are successful in Mains Exam will be called for interview. Final selection will be done on the basis of marks obtained in Mains and Interview.
NEET exam 2026 was canceled on May 12 due to paper leak.
NEET UG exam 2026 was held in 551 cities across the country and 14 cities abroad. 22 lakh students appeared in this exam. NEET UG 2026 exam has been canceled due to paper leak. There were demonstrations across the country against this rigging.
According to NTA, information about irregularities in the examination was received on the evening of May 7. After this the matter was handed over to the central agencies. On May 12, the exam was canceled and the decision to re-exam was taken.
NEET exam is being conducted again on June 21. The exam will be held in pen and paper mode from 2 to 5:15 pm. The paper setters will be kept in lockdown at an unknown place till the exam is conducted. During this period they will have to follow strict restrictions. This is the first time in the history of NEET that strict steps have been taken for paper setters to avoid the possibility of paper leak.
