1. VD Satheesan will be the new Chief Minister of Kerala

  • The name of the 13th Chief Minister of Kerala was announced on 14 May.
  • All India Congress Committee member Deepa Dasmunshi said that VD Satheesan will be the new Chief Minister of Kerala.
  • VD Satheesan’s full name is Vadasseri Damodaran Satheesan. He is the MLA from Paravur seat in Ernakulam district.
  • Satheesan started his career as a lawyer in the Kerala High Court.
  • In 1996, Congress had fielded Satheesan for the first time from Paravur assembly seat, but he lost to Left’s P Raju.
  • Satheesan was elected MLA from Paravur for the first time in 2001 and till now he is MLA from this seat.
  • In 2021, Satheesan became the Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly.
  • The results of Kerala assembly elections were declared on 4 May. In this, the Congress-led UDF alliance had won 102 out of total 140 seats.
  • Earlier, LDF leader Pinarayi Vijayan has been the Chief Minister of Kerala twice from 2016 to 2026.

2. Tenure of CBI Director Praveen Sood extended

On May 13, the tenure of Praveen Sood, Director of CBI, i.e. Central Bureau of Investigation, was extended for one year.

  • The Appointments Committee (ACC) of the Union Cabinet has approved extension of his tenure.
  • Praveen Sood will now continue on the post of CBI Director till 24 May 2027.
  • Praveen’s tenure was also extended in May 2025. His tenure has been extended for the second time.
  • Praveen is a 1986 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer.
  • Praveen was appointed Police Advisor to the Government of Mauritius in 1999.
  • Praveen served as the Police Commissioner of Mysuru from 2004 to 2007 and Additional Police Commissioner from 2008 to 2011.
  • In May 2023, Praveen was appointed Director of CBI for two years, replacing Subodh Kumar Jaiswal.
  • In 2011, Sood received the President’s Police Medal for distinguished service.

  • CBI Director is elected for a minimum term of 2 years.

3. Akash Ambani appointed Managing Director of Jio Platforms

On May 13, Reliance Industries’ digital arm ‘Jio Platforms’ informed about the appointment of Akash Ambani as the Managing Director (MD) of the company.

  • Jio platform is a digital service platform. It is a subsidiary of Reliance Industries.
  • Akash Ambani’s tenure has become effective from April 9, 2026 and he will hold the post for 5 years.
  • Jio Platforms is also working on technology with AI-based services like JioPC and machine learning platform JioBrain.
  • Akash Ambani has been on the board of Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL) since October 2014 and has been associated with the group’s digital and telecom strategy.
  • Jio Platforms Limited (JPL) includes Reliance Jio Infocomm (Telecom), My Jio, Jio Cinema, Jio Saavn and other digital apps.

4. Uber to open its first data center in India

On May 14, Uber partnered with Adani Group to launch its first data center in India.

  • Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced this partnership. This data center can start by the end of 2026.
  • Uber is an American company that provides personal rides and home delivery services.
  • In the Uber data center, work will be done on increasing the speed of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cloud-based infrastructure and data processing.
  • Adani Group is also building an AI data center in Visakhapatnam with an investment of $15 billion.
  • Uber had earlier partnered with Adani Group for electric vehicle (EV) service in 2024.
  • Uber CEO Khosrowshahi has come on a 5-day visit to India. During this time he will also meet Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu.
  • Uber company was created in March 2009. It started services in India in August 2013.

5. MoU signed between Indian Army and Navy

Indian Army and Indian Navy signed an MoU for inter-service co-operation.

  • Its main objective is to establish coordination between the formations, regiments, establishments and ships of both the armies.
  • This MoU was signed by Lieutenant General VPS Kaushik from the Army side and Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh from the Navy side.
  • On this occasion, Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth and Deputy Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan were also present.
  • This initiative has been taken after joint operations like ‘Operation Sindoor’. This MoU will promote lasting and mutual cooperation between regiments, institutions and ships.

5. Karnataka government withdraws decision to ban hijab in schools, colleges

On May 13, the Karnataka government withdrew the 2022 decision to ban hijab in schools and colleges.

  • Under the new order of the government, apart from hijab, students have also been allowed to wear Kalava, Rudraksh and Janeu. Provided that these are within the discipline and rules of the school.
  • In February 2022, the then BJP government of Karnataka had made it mandatory for students in government colleges to follow the prescribed uniform. After the order, entry into classes wearing hijab was banned in many government educational institutions.

7. Former MP Sudhanshu Sil passes away

On May 14, senior CPI(M) leader and former MP Sudhanshu Sil died in Kolkata. He was 81 years old.

  • Sudhanshu was a councilor and Mayor-in-Council member 5 times between 1990 and 2015.
  • Sudhanshu was an MLA from Jorabagaan constituency of West Bengal.
  • Sudhanshu was a Lok Sabha member from Kolkata North West constituency from 2004 to 2009.
