1. PM Modi attends rituals at Somnath temple

On May 11, PM Narendra Modi attended the program on the occasion of completion of 75 years of consecration at Somnath Temple in Gujarat.

  • On 11 May 1951, the newly built Somnath Temple was consecrated in independent India.
  • Somnath Amrit Mahotsav is being celebrated to celebrate 75 years of the consecration of the Somnath temple.

2. Justice Surya Kant launches AI chatbot ‘Su Sahay’

On May 11, Chief Justice Surya Kant launched ‘One Case One Data’ system and AI chatbot ‘Su Sahay’ under judicial digitization.

  • The ‘One Case One Data’ system will link case records of all levels of the Supreme Court, High Court, District and Taluk Courts into a unified database.
  • This will be the first time where data from Supreme Court to Taluk Court will be linked to each other.
  • With this, the judges of the Supreme Court will be able to see the complete information about the cases of the lower courts in real time and the lower courts will also be able to get the data of the higher courts.
  • This system will be able to automatically extract and verify information related to the case.
  • Along with this, the High Court will also get access to the data, this will improve case tracking and coordination between the courts.
  • This initiative has been started to strengthen the case management system of the court.

‘Su Sahay’ chatbot

  • ‘Su Sahay’ is an AI chatbot, which has been developed by the National Informatics Center i.e. NIC in collaboration with the Supreme Court Registry.
  • It will be available on the Supreme Court website and will provide information related to the case to the petitioners and stakeholders.
  • It will also help in understanding the court services easily so that access to justice can be easy.

3. MoU signed between RBI and ECB

On May 10, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the European Central Bank (ECB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Its purpose is to increase cooperation between the two central banks.

  • This MoU was signed by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra and ECB President Christine Lagarde during the meeting of BIS (Bank for International Settlements) held in the city of Basel, Switzerland.
  • Through this, both the institutions will work together on sharing information, discussing policies and increasing technical cooperation.
  • This may also include joint seminars and workshops on issues related to central banking.
  • This cooperation will be on those issues related to Central Banking in which both have common interest.
  • Also, this agreement will not be applicable over and above the domestic laws of any country.
  • This is an updated version of the old agreement of 2015, which comes into force as soon as the MoU is signed and has no fixed time limit.
  • The first MoU between RBI and ECB was signed on 12 January 2015. At that time the ECB chief was Mario Draghi and RBI governor Raghuram Rajan.
  • This agreement was signed in 2015 with the aim of increasing cooperation between RBI and ECB.
  • This initiative was taken in view of the financial uncertainties following the global economic recession of 2008.
  • Both sides described this agreement as necessary for global financial stability and better coordination between the regulatory systems of different countries.
  • ECB President Christine Lagarde has described this as part of the ongoing dialogue and cooperation between the world’s major central banks.

4. India and Trinidad Tobago signed MoU

On May 10, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar signed eight agreements with India and Trinidad and Tobago, including on tourism, healthcare, infrastructure and Ayurveda, during his two-day visit to the Caribbean country.

  • In this MoU, India will help in solarization of the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and CARICOM Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago, vector control and improving the infrastructure of Nelson Island.
  • MoUs have also been signed to establish Nelson Island where Indian immigrants stayed and an Indian Chair on Ayurveda at the University of the West Indies.
  • During his visit, S Jaishankar held talks with Caribbean PM Kamla Prasad-Bissessar and other senior leaders on increasing bilateral cooperation.
  • Along with this, Jaishankar also reviewed the progress of the announcements made by PM Narendra Modi during his visit to Trinidad and Tobago last year.
  • In the presence of PM Prasad-Bissessar, Dr. Jaishankar handed over the first batch of two thousand laptops to school children and inaugurated an agriculture facility.

5. Telugu actor Bharat Kant passes away

On May 10, Telugu actor Bharat Kant died in a road accident in Hyderabad. He was 31 years old. Cinematographer G.Sai Trilok also lost his life in this accident.

  • Bharat Kant worked in the 2021 film Gramam and the 2024 film Tenant.
  • Bharat also acted in the web series Geetanjali and Parvati Parameswarulu.

6. India-Africa Forum Summit to be held in New Delhi

India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS-IV) was announced on 11 May. This summit will be held in New Delhi on May 31, in which heads of state of many countries will participate.

  • Before this, a meeting of foreign ministers will also be held on May 28.
  • In this summit, issues like economy and trade, defense and security, critical minerals, energy, space and high technology agriculture, health, education, capacity building and climate change will be discussed.
  • After the end of the summit, an agenda format will also be released, in which India’s becoming a developed nation by 2047 will be combined with Africa’s Agenda 2063.
  • Think tank dialogues and an India-Africa film festival are also planned along with the summit.
  • Over the past decade, India has significantly expanded its diplomatic and political footprint across the continent.
  • India also opened 17 new diplomatic missions in Africa in New Delhi in 2018.
  • India has so far given more than 190 lines of credit worth more than $10 billion to 41 African states.
  • India is the fourth largest trading partner among the top five investors of Africa.
  • India has also signed digital cooperation framework agreements with seven African countries.
  • India contributes approximately five thousand peacekeepers to UN missions in Africa and has increased India’s involvement in maritime security, anti-piracy operations and defense exports.
  • The third India-Africa Forum Summit was held in New Delhi in October 2015.
