1. Claire Mazumdar will be the new chairperson of Biocon

On May 6, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, founder and chairperson of biopharmaceutical company Biocon, appointed her niece Claire Mazumdar as her successor.

  • In an interview with Fortune India, Kiran said that Claire will lead the next phase of the company.
  • Claire Majumdar is currently the Founder and CEO of ‘Bikara Therapeutics’.
  • Bikara’s market capitalization is more than $1.6 billion.
  • Claire studied at MIT and Stanford University and holds a PhD in Cancer Biology.
  • Claire also serves on the boards of Riley Therapeutics and Nura Health, which works to improve patient recovery by training family caregivers.
  • Biocon was founded in 1978 by Kiran Mazumdar, its headquarters is in Bengaluru.
  • Biocon mainly manufactures biosimilars, insulin, generic formulations.

2. Kumar Mangalam Birla becomes non-executive chairman of Vi

On May 5, the board of Vodafone-Idea (Vi) appointed Kumar Mangalam Birla as non-executive chairman of the company.

  • The company gave the name of Kumar Mangalam Birla in the information given to the stock exchange.
  • Kumar Mangalam has been appointed after the current chairman Ravindra Takkar stepped down.

  • Recently, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has reduced the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) of Vodafone-Idea by about Rs 20,000 crore.

3. Indian Army and BEL signed MoU worth Rs 1476 crore

On May 5, the Defense Ministry signed an MoU worth Rs 1,476 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Hyderabad, for the procurement of five ground-based mobile electronic systems for the Indian Army.

  • This MoU was signed in the presence of Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh at Dutva Bhawan-2, New Delhi.
  • Under the MoU, 5 Ground-Based Mobile Electronic Systems (GBMES) will be procured for the Indian Army.
  • Under this MoU, 72% indigenous material will be used in making GBMES.
  • GBMES will help in detecting enemy radars and analyze signals.
  • GBMES will be able to work according to real time intelligence and situation.
  • GBMES will help in enhancing air defense and electronic warfare capabilities.
  • GBMES will increase military capacity, networking and combat capability.
  • GBMES will be easy to transport from one place to another. This can be quickly deployed at different places through trucks.
  • GBMES will modernize the Indian Army and upgrade it with advanced electronic systems with advanced technology.

4. Union Cabinet approved to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court

On May 5, the Union Cabinet has approved the proposal to introduce the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Parliament.

  • Addressing a press briefing in New Delhi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave this information.
  • If the bill is passed, the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court will be increased from the current 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
  • The Union Cabinet wants to amend the Supreme Court (Judges Act, 1956).
  • There are more than 70 thousand pending cases in the Supreme Court, their backlog will be reduced.
  • With the increase in judges, more benches will be able to sit together.

  • When this Act came into force in 1956, the number of judges in the Supreme Court, apart from the Chief Justice, was fixed at 10.
  • It has also been amended many times, it was last amended in 2019.

5. UIDAI signs MoU with National Forensic Science University

On May 5, an MoU was signed with Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and National Forensic Science University (NFSU) for 5 years.

  • This partnership has been made to work in the field of digital forensics, cyber security and better technology research.
  • The Ministry of Electronics and IT said that a better structure will be created for MoU cooperation.
  • This agreement will do joint research for AI (Artificial Intelligence), Blockchain, Deepfake Detection and Cryptographic Technology.
  • This MoU will increase the reach of NFSU students in six strategic pillars academic and professional development, information security, technical advisory and research and will also open avenues for placement.
  • UIDAI CEO Vivek Chandra Verma and NFSU Gujarat Campus Director Professor S.O. Junaro signed this MoU.
