1. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav launches Srinagar Vande Bharat Express
On April 30, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav flagged off the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express from Jammu Tawi. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh were also present at the launch ceremony.
- Earlier this train used to run between Srinagar to Katra, which has now been extended to Jammu Tawi. This is the busiest railway station of this region.
- Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express will run regularly from May 2.
- The journey of 266 km by Jammu-Srinagar Express train will be completed in about 5 hours.
- Coach capacity in Jammu-Srinagar Express train has been increased from 8 to 20 coaches.
This train will run six days a week.
2. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh met Italy’s Guido Crosetto
On April 30, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh met Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto in New Delhi. Had bilateral talks with Defense Minister Rajnath Crosetto.
- Mutual cooperation and global security will be discussed in this meeting.
- The heads of both the countries discussed many defense related issues. Also talked about regional and global issues.
- Defense cooperation between India and Italy has been growing steadily in recent years. Rajnath Singh also visited Rome in October 2023.
- Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has come on his first official visit to India.
- This visit is to expand the scope of defense relations and for joint development, co-production and technology sharing.
- In January 2026, India-EU signed an MoU regarding Defense and Strategic Partnership.
- Both sides are likely to explore ways to enhance cooperation in emerging areas such as maritime security, cyber defense and advanced military technologies.
- Defense Minister Guido Crosetto laid a wreath at the National War Memorial and inspected the guard of honor before meeting Rajnath.
- Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh met Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Defense Ministers’ meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
After the meeting of the two chiefs, the industry’s shareholding in defense production and innovation can be increased.
3. DRDO launches short range naval anti-ship missile from helicopter
On April 29, DRDO and Navy jointly launched Short Range Naval Anti-Ship (NASM-SR) missile from a helicopter in the Bay of Bengal.
- During this, the missile was launched from the Navy’s Sea King helicopter.
- Two missiles were fired from the helicopter a few seconds apart, both of which accurately hit the bottom of the ship.
- Through the launch, India tested the capability of launching 2 salvos simultaneously. Salvo means the ability to fire more missiles in less time from one launcher.
- The full name of the missile is NASM-SR. The full name is Naval Anti Ship Missile – Short Range.
- It is a short range naval anti-ship missile, which can dodge enemy radar systems.
- The entire flight of the missile and its target were tracked through radar, electro-optical system and telemetry installed at the test range in Chandipur, Odisha.
- NASM-SR missile has been developed jointly by different labs of DRDO and Indian industries. Now it is also being produced in the country itself.
- Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that the development of this missile will greatly increase the strength of the army.
NASM-SR missiles can launch fast and accurate maritime attacks from helicopters.
DEATH 4. Indian golfer Vijay Kumar passes away
Famous Indian golf player Vijay Kumar passed away on 29 April. He was 57 years old. Vijay won the 2002 Indian Open.
- Vijay Kumar was one of the most successful players of Indian golf.
- Vijay was elected Player of the Year four times from 1995 to 2000 and received the title of ‘Order of Merit’.
- Vijay started his career as a professional golfer in 1988.
- Vijay also represented India in the 1999 Alfred Dunhill Cup in St. Andrews, Scotland.
- There are only 9 golfers in India, out of which one title is in the name of Vijay.
- Vijay won several titles on the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) and the Indian Circuit.
- Due to financial constraints, Vijay started working as a caddy in a golf club.
- Caddies i.e. people who follow the golfers by carrying their bags and gradually they started playing professional golf.
Vijay started his career as a professional golfer in 1988.
International 5. Passports with President Donald Trump’s photo will be issued
On April 29, America announced the issuance of a special passport with the photo of President Donald Trump on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of independence.
- These limited edition newly designed American passports will be issued. Besides, it will also have the golden signature of President Trump.
- According to the report, these passports will be launched from the Washington Passport Agency.
- Those who renew their passport there will get this default passport.
- Also, those applying online and at other centers will get passports with the designs currently in use.
- The back cover of the passport will feature an image of John Trumbull’s painting ‘Declaration of Independence’.
- This famous painting chronicles the year 1776, when American leaders first presented the Instrument of Independence to Congress.
- American passports currently issued feature a painting by Percy Moran on the inside front cover, depicting the morning after Francis Scott’s attack on Fort McHenry.
- President Trump’s picture has been used before. Before that, the new Trump and George Washington are photographed together at a national park pass from the Interior Department.
- This will be the first passport in the whole world, in which a President’s photograph will be on the passport. Generally, most countries print photographs of historical monuments.
Last month, the Commission of Fine Arts also approved a commemorative coin bearing Trump’s image.

6. FIFA World Cup increases total prize money
The total prize money for the FIFA World Cup has been increased on 29 April. Along with this, the guaranteed money received by all the players has also been increased.
- The prize money has been increased from $727 million (about Rs 6800 crore) to $871 million (about Rs 8250 crore).
- Along with this, the guaranteed amount received by each team has also been increased to 12.5 million dollars (about 118 crores).
- The prize pool in 2022 was $440 million (about Rs 3600 crore), which has now increased to almost double.
- In 2002, the winning team used to get around Rs 70 crore, which increased to Rs 150 crore in 2006, Rs 250 crore in 2010 and now in 2026, the winner is expected to get around Rs 420 crore.
- 48 teams will participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and will be the biggest tournament ever with 104 matches.
