3. DRDO launches short range naval anti-ship missile from helicopter

On April 29, DRDO and Navy jointly launched Short Range Naval Anti-Ship (NASM-SR) missile from a helicopter in the Bay of Bengal.

  • During this, the missile was launched from the Navy’s Sea King helicopter.
  • Two missiles were fired from the helicopter a few seconds apart, both of which accurately hit the bottom of the ship.
  • Through the launch, India tested the capability of launching 2 salvos simultaneously. Salvo means the ability to fire more missiles in less time from one launcher.
  • The full name of the missile is NASM-SR. The full name is Naval Anti Ship Missile – Short Range.
  • It is a short range naval anti-ship missile, which can dodge enemy radar systems.
  • The entire flight of the missile and its target were tracked through radar, electro-optical system and telemetry installed at the test range in Chandipur, Odisha.
  • NASM-SR missile has been developed jointly by different labs of DRDO and Indian industries. Now it is also being produced in the country itself.

On April 29, America announced the issuance of a special passport with the photo of President Donald Trump on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of independence.
