Most of the universities in ‘Times Higher Education’ (THE) Asia University Rankings 2026 are Indian. Out of the total 929 universities included in the ranking, 128 are Indian, which is the highest. However, 5 Chinese universities are included in the top 10 list, while no Indian university has been able to make it even to the top 40.

China remains on top for the 8th consecutive year

According to the ranking, China has once again maintained its dominance among the top 10 universities of Asia. Chinese universities are at first and second positions and 5 Chinese universities are also included in the top 10.

Tsinghua University remains on top in this ranking for the 8th consecutive year. Peking University also remains at second position. Apart from this, two universities each from Singapore and Hong Kong are also included in the list. A Japanese university has also made its place in the list.

Not a single Indian university in top 40

India is the most represented nation in the ranking list with 128 institutes and universities. After this, Japan is at second place with 115 institutes. However, there is not a single Indian institute in the top 40 in the list.

There is only one institute in the top 50 in the list – Indian Institute of Science. In fact, this is the only institute in the top 100.

Ranking of Indian universities fell compared to last year

Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru is ranked 43rd with a score of 65.1. It is five ranks below its 38th rank last year with a score of 65.2. At the same time, it has fallen by 11 ranks compared to 32nd rank in 2024.

At the same time, Indian Institute of Technology, Indore has also fallen by 10 ranks from 131st rank in 2025 to 141st rank in 2026. It was ranked 78 in 2021.

Two Pakistani universities in top 150

Among the top 150 universities are Pakistan’s Quaid-e-Azam University (rank 148) and National University of Sciences and Technology (rank 150).

In the ranking of 2025, the rank of Quaid-e-Azam University was 137, which has now slipped by 11 ranks to 148. The ranking of National University of Sciences and Technology has increased from 145 to 150.

Only 12 Indian universities in top 200, last year there were 14.

There are 12 Indian institutes and universities in the top 200 in the 2026 ranking, whereas last year there were 14. This year, Anna University (Rank 111 in 2025), Mahatma Gandhi University (Rank 140 in 2025), IIT Guwahati (Rank 184 in 2025), UPES (Rank 188 in 2025) and IIIT Hyderabad (Rank 200 in 2025) have dropped out of the top 200.

Instead, Aligarh Muslim University, Lovely Professional University, Manipal Academy of Higher Education and University of Delhi have made it to the top 200. Whereas Savita Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences is at 128 rank after improving by 21 ranks from 149. KIIT University is ranked 169 from 184.
